12 May, 2016

Organisation isn’t about perfection; it’s about efficiency, reducing clutter and stress. Teaching kids to be organized from an early age will benefit them in the long run.

5 easy tips on teaching kids to be organized

Being organized is an important aspect of daily life.… it feels good! A clean, tidy and organized surrounding makes people feel fresh and joyful. An orderly day makes us feel productive.

Teaching kids to be organized at an early age is important as it will help them in their day to day life. From managing school work, hobbies, household chores and future careers, having the ability to organize one's day will help prepare children for life.

So, here are a few simple ways how to instil organization in your kid. Put these tips into practice and help build good habits now.

1. Break tasks into chunks

1. Break tasks into chunks

Start small! Help them break their school projects or house chores into smaller and manageable steps. This will make them realize that every task has a start, middle and end - making projects feel less burdensome.

For instance, if your child's nightly routine is to clear the dining table, give him the following instructions: First, scrape remains into the bin, next load the dishes into the dishwasher and then wipe the table top.

2. Make checklists and to-do lists

2. Make checklists and to-do lists

Once you are done with explaining things and ways to carry out a task, help your child to add what he learnt to a to-do list. Encourage him to keep the list in a place where he can easily access it, so that he can check off accomplishments as he proceeds throughout the day. This will give him a sense of accomplishment that can make him keep going.
3. Establish daily routines

3. Establish daily routines

Help your child create a regular schedule that can help him learn what to expect the whole day. Picture schedules, clocks and other time management strategies can help in the process. It's important to involve your older child in creating his own routine to get his willing participation.
4. Create fun memory aids

4. Create fun memory aids

Teach your child how to create his own mnemonics - sentences, songs, acronyms or cartoons - for remembering information. Kids can use these memory aids for doing things like preparing for an exam, or recalling their locker combination.
5. Set a designated study time

5. Set a designated study time

Your child should understand that a certain chunk of time in everyday routine should be reserved for studying and doing homework. Usually, the best time is not right after school as children are already tired by them. Include your child in making this decision; ask him when he feels most productive when studying. Even if he doesn't have any homework, the reserved time should be used to review the day's lessons or simply to read for pleasure. Instilling some order in your child's study habits will allow a lot more time for actual studying! Teaching kids to be organized is important and helpful in their everyday life.
