7 Stereotypes Of Singaporean Stay-At-Home Mums

1 May, 2016

We are all sick of hearing all these false stereotypes circulating about us because for the last time, no, we're not all tai-tais

7 commonly heard stereotypes of Singaporean stay-at-home mums

7 commonly heard stereotypes of Singaporean stay-at-home mums

Calling all stay-at-home mummies, aren't we all sick of hearing all these false stereotypes circulating about us? For the last time, no, we're not all tai-tais!

We've created a list of the most commonly heard stereotypes so mummies, grab your popcorn!

We only know how to play mahjong

We only know how to play mahjong

No, not all of us do. Even if we do know how to play mahjong, that's not what we do all day! Some of us hasn't even touched a single mahjong tile before, not to mention actually playing a mahjong game. We have better things to do than spending everyday sitting in a table for four while looking at little tiles!
We spend all day gossiping about the neighbours

We spend all day gossiping about the neighbours

Okay, we won't say that we don't gossip about them at all but we certainly don't spend all day gossiping! Sure, once in a while there'd be something interesting to talk about but come on, we're not the news. We don't know what's going on with everybody every time!
We pay for cheaper groceries because we're friends with all the vendors at the market

We pay for cheaper groceries because we're friends with all the vendors at the market

One of the most popular stereotype is that we're friends with the fish seller uncle or the Nasi Padang makcik, so we're capable of getting things at a cheaper price. This is not entirely wrong on the "friends" part but getting things at a cheaper price though, that's more dependent on your skills as a bargainer as compared to your social skills.
We cook amazing dishes everyday

We cook amazing dishes everyday

The misconception is that we plan what to cook for lunch/dinners everyday which would usually lead to a dinner table filled with dishes.

Well some times, that's the case. It's fun getting excited about knowing what food to prepare for the family. But other times, we'd choose to settle for instant mix or instant noodles!

We have a lot of "me-time"

We have a lot of "me-time"

Not true! Our everyday itinerary consists of getting everybody else in the family up and ready for work/school, getting the food ready and of course, the standard household chores.

All of these would be enough to fill up the 7 or so hours that we're alone at home, which will then be followed by us fetching the kids from school, making sure they do their homework and all that kind of thing. So tell me, do we have a lot of "me-time"?

We're tai-tais

We're tai-tais

Being a stay-at-home mum doesn't mean that our husbands are big shots of their companies. Or that our family is financially stable with just one parent working. There are a variety of reasons on why we choose to be stay-at-home mums. So, no, we're not all tai-tais!
We know the other stay-at-home mums in the neighbourhood

We know the other stay-at-home mums in the neighbourhood

No, we don't have a "xx neighbourhood stay-at-home mums" club that we would arrange a specific timing everyday to meet-up with and talk about the latest current affairs. We do have amazing friends staying around the neighbourhood but that doesn't mean all of our friends are stay-at-home mums as well!

Mummies, do these relate to you? Share your thoughts with us!
