These mums could be your next MP

It is Singapore GE2015, and this time our mum candidates range from newly minted mums to experienced ones; from political veterans to new kids on the block; from models to entrepreneurs. But they all have one thing in common -- each of them understands women's and children's issues intimately.

Come, let's meet some of the mum's at this year's GE.

Tin Pei Ling, People's Action Party

Tin Pei Ling, People's Action Party

Standing from: Macpherson SMC

Ms Tin Pei Ling gave birth to a baby boy just over a month ago. She is back on her feet and all set to prove that becoming a mother only makes her better at her job not weaker.

In a candid moment, she shared that while she may have worries about missing out on some of her son’s key milestones, she is sure that he will, "grow up to understand the importance of good Government, why we need to set a good foundation for future generations."

Kevryn Lim, National Solidarity Party

Kevryn Lim, National Solidarity Party

Standing from: Sembawang GRC

Ms Kevryn Lim recently shared that is a single mum to a son who is two years and eight months old. The 26-year-old candidate has previously lived and modelled in Hong Kong, Perth and Singapore and is contesting in Sembawang GRC. She says that she wants to improve the benefits for single parents in Singapore.

Sim Ann, People's Action Party

Sim Ann, People's Action Party

Standing from: Holland-Bukit Timah GRC

Ms Sim Ann held the post of Minister of State for Education and Communications and Information before the dissolution of Parliament.

When she gave birth to her second son on 22 November 2011, this mum of three, also became the first MP in Singapore to give birth while holding office.

Lee Li Lian, The Workers' Party

Lee Li Lian, The Workers' Party

Standing from: Punggol East SMC

Thirty-seven-year-old Ms Lee Li Lian is a mum to a a gorgeous one-year-old daughter, Karys Koh. She is the eldest of three sisters and is a financial trainer. Talking about balancing being in active politics with raising a young family work and family she says, "I'm responsible for bringing Karys into this world. I should have the responsibility to play a part in helping to shape the country's future where she will be growing up in."

She has worked her way up from being a a volunteer with the Worker’s Party during the 2006 General Elections to becoming the President of the Workers’ Party Youth Wing after GE2011.

Sun Xueling, People's Action Party

Sun Xueling, People's Action Party

Standing from: Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC

A graduate of NUS and then London School of Economics, Ms Sun Xueling is currently an investment director at Temasek Holdings. Mum to one daughter, Ms Xueling is a third generation Singaporean and was raised by her grandmother who she says, encouraged her to volunteer and help the needy. She joined PAP grassroots at the age of 22.

Jaslyn Go, Singapore Democratic Party

Jaslyn Go, Singapore Democratic Party

Standing from: Yuhua SMC

Ms Jaslyn Go is assistant treasurer of the SDP and has been with the party since 2007, mostly helping out with fundraising. This mum of two has had humble beginnings, working from the age of 12 to put herself through school.

Her focus is on changing Singapore’s education system. She feels that the education system in Singapore is really very stressful for the kids. She believes, "children must be given time to be children."

Jessica Tan Soon Neo, People's Action Party

Jessica Tan Soon Neo, People's Action Party

Standing from: East Coast GRC

Ms Jessica Tan Soon Neo is seasoned politician, serving her second term as a Member of Parliament for East Coast GRC (Changi Simei). This mum of three is currently the Managing Director, Microsoft Operations Pte Ltd Singapore as well as the Chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Finance, Trade & Industry and Member of the Manpower GPC.

According to her, "Women are an integral part of the family, workplace and community. As individuals or collectively, women can make a positive difference in society." Amongst other things, she is focused on policies that enable women and provide them the choice to stay in the workforce and progress.

Nor Lella Mardiah Bte Mohamed, National Solidarity Party,

Nor Lella Mardiah Bte Mohamed, National Solidarity Party,

Standing from: Tampines GRC

Ms Nor Lella is a mum to four children - three girls and one boy. She believes that parenting through divorce can be very tough and the most important thing is to focus on the children and what is best for them.

She has been in politics since 2006 – and is focused on women and minority issues.

Joan Pereira, People's Action Party

Joan Pereira, People's Action Party

Standing from: Tanjong Pagar GRC

Ms Joan Pereira, has a long history of being in public service. A mother of two, she has most recently been understudying Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Indranee Rajah. She is a former People's Association (PA) director who spent over 10 years at Queenstown Community Centre.

In 2007, she helmed the PA's Active Aging and Family Life portfolio, serving elderly residents across the 87 constituencies through the Wellness Programme. According to her the welfare of the elderly is a top priority for her. She has said, "I really have deep fulfilment serving the elderly because that is my passion."
