Over the years, Singapore has experienced a gradual decline in resident Age-Specific Fertility Rates (ASFRs) for those aged below 30 years, while seeing a slight rise for those aged 30 years and over. This shift represents a significant change from 1980, when fertility rates peaked among females aged 25-29 years. This trend indicates a delay in childbirth among females, with fertility rates now highest among females aged 30-34 years.

Singapore Fertility Rate: A Snapshot of 2022’s Data

The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is another crucial metric to understand when discussing Singapore’s fertility rate. TFR refers to the average number of live-births each female would have during her reproductive years if she were subject to the prevailing ASFRs in the population in the given year.

In simpler terms, it’s a way of calculating the average number of children a woman will have during her lifetime.

Understanding the Dip in Singapore Fertility Rate: The Year of the Tiger Effect

In 2022, Singapore recorded 30,429 citizen births, marking a 4.0% decrease from the 31,713 citizen births in 2021. Moreover, the annual average number of births in the past five years (31,800) was also lower than that in the preceding five years (32,700). The resident total fertility rate (TFR) reached a historic low of 1.04 in 2022.

This decline in TFR coincided with the year of the Tiger in the Lunar calendar, a year generally associated with lower births among the Chinese.

Singapore Fertility Rate in Numbers: Detailed Data for 2022

Here’s a breakdown of the 2022 Age-Specific Fertility Rates (ASFRs) per thousand females across different age groups:

Age Group (Years) Per Thousand Females
15-19 2.1
20-24 11.2
25-29 48.8
30-34 86.7
35-39 49.4
40-44 9.8
45-49 0.4

The sum of ASFRs by 5-yearly age groups is 208.4. Dividing by 1,000 (since the ASFRs are expressed per thousand females while the TFR is expressed per female) gives us a TFR of 1.04 per female.
