Singapore Experiences Rare 'Air Con Weather', Lower Temperatures Surprise Residents

Singapore Experiences Rare 'Air Con Weather', Lower Temperatures Surprise Residents

Singapore residents were treated to a delightful surprise on the night of November 30 as the temperature dropped, making it a true "air con weather" night.

Singapore residents were treated to a delightful surprise on the night of November 30 as the temperature dropped, making it a true “air con weather” night.

The cool breeze and lower temperatures allowed many to sleep without the need for air conditioners, a welcome change in this tropical city-state.

A Rainy Respite Brings the Chill

The sudden drop in temperature, which fell to around or under 25°C, was due to the rain that started in the afternoon. According to the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), the lowest temperature, a cool 24.1°C, was observed in Jurong West at the stroke of midnight.

In Changi, the temperature also took a significant dip, dropping 0.9°C within an hour’s time, from 25.6°C at 10:22pm to a comfortable 24.7°C at 11:27pm. This made for a pleasant “air con weather” evening, a rarity in sunny Singapore.

Heavy Rainfall: A Blessing in Disguise

According to the data, the heaviest rainfall in Singapore occurred at Changi from 10:40pm to 11:40pm, accumulating a substantial 33.4mm. Furthermore, the national water agency PUB issued an alert at 10 pm on Nov. 30, warning of heavy rain in southern, western, and eastern areas of Singapore from 10:30 pm on Nov. 30 to midnight.

However, the heavy rain had eased approximately an hour later, according to PUB, leaving behind cooler temperatures and a refreshing “air con weather” atmosphere across the city.

Inter-Monsoon Period in Singapore

MSS noted in its fortnightly forecast for the first half of November 2023 that November is one of the wettest months for Singapore. This is due to the ongoing inter-monsoon period, during which light and variable winds, coupled with strong daytime heating of land areas, lead to the development of localised and intense thunderstorms.

Just three days ago, some parts of Jurong experienced flash floods due to heavy rain on Nov. 28 afternoon. A video circulating online showed water overflowing the streets along Boon Lay Avenue near River Valley High School, with car tires almost completely covered by water.

Embrace the “Air Con Weather”

While the rains may have caused temporary discomfort, they also brought about a much-needed respite from the usual humid weather, creating a perfect “air con weather” night. As we continue to navigate the inter-monsoon period, let’s embrace these cool nights and enjoy the refreshing change.

And remember, while we can’t predict when the next “air con weather” night will be, we can always stay updated through the MSS and PUB alerts. Stay safe, stay dry, and enjoy the chill while it lasts!
