New Research Reveals Singaporeans Are Neglecting Hearing Health

New Research Reveals Singaporeans Are Neglecting Hearing Health

A new study finds many Singaporeans delay hearing care, even when diagnosed—learn why early intervention matters.

Despite recognizing the importance of hearing health, many Singaporean adults are not prioritizing regular hearing tests or treatment, according to the latest ‘Healthy Ears, Healthy Years’ survey by Cochlear. Released in conjunction with World Hearing Day 2025, the study reveals concerning trends about hearing loss awareness and barriers to seeking help.

Key Findings on Hearing Health in Singapore

  • Many delay seeking treatment – 34% of adults say they wouldn’t seek treatment even if diagnosed with hearing loss.
  • Misconceptions persist – 33% of Singaporeans mistakenly believe hearing aids and cochlear implants work the same way.
  • Cost is a major barrier – 68% of adults have avoided hearing care due to financial concerns.

Why Aren’t Singaporeans Prioritizing Their Hearing?

Although 87% of respondents rank hearing tests as important, and 91% know solutions exist, many still avoid getting tested.

  • 27% rate their hearing as “fair” or “poor”, yet only 5% have been officially diagnosed and treated.
  • 25% would wait until hearing loss significantly interferes with daily life before seeking help.
  • 44% have skipped hearing tests due to financial concerns.

Dr. Yuen Heng Wai, Associate Professor & Senior Consultant ENT Surgeon, highlights why early intervention is crucial: “Many of my patients have had their hearing gradually decline—sometimes it’s not immediately noticeable, so they may take a long time before seeking help. This research reinforces what we know to be true in the clinical setting; once they receive the appropriate treatment and care, it can have a huge benefit on their quality of life.”

The Cost Barrier: A Major Hurdle

The survey found that cost concerns prevent many from seeking help, particularly among older adults.

  • 82% say cost is a key reason for avoiding hearing care.
  • 50% have not seen a specialist due to financial worries.
  • 33% do not use hearing devices because of perceived expenses.
  • 31% of adults aged 55+ cite cost as a key reason for delaying treatment.

Government-subsidized schemes like Project Silver Screen help make hearing care more accessible to Singapore’s aging population, offering financial support for screenings and early intervention.

A Common Misconception: Hearing Aids vs. Cochlear Implants

The study found widespread confusion about hearing solutions.

  • 33% of Singaporeans mistakenly believe cochlear implants and hearing aids work the same way.
  • Hearing aids amplify sound, whereas cochlear implants enhance sound clarity, making them more suitable for people with severe hearing loss.

The Benefits of Early Treatment

For those who seek treatment, the benefits are life-changing:

  • 86% of hearing aid or cochlear implant users report a significant improvement in quality of life.
  • 92% say they wish they had sought treatment sooner.

Amy Zheng, General Manager, Asia Growth Markets at Cochlear, emphasizes the importance of proactive hearing care: “Hearing is more than just being able to hear, it’s deeply connected to our everyday health and wellbeing. Monitoring and treating hearing loss early helps keep us socially connected, mentally well, and physically safe. Because hearing loss may get worse, knowing when to address it with the right solution at the right time is important for overall health and wellbeing.”

Take Control of Your Hearing Health

With World Hearing Day highlighting the importance of early intervention, Cochlear has launched a new online Hearing Quiz to help Singaporeans assess their hearing in just seven questions.

By raising awareness and making hearing care more accessible, Singaporeans can take proactive steps toward better hearing health and overall well-being.
