Two separate incidents of rape of teens in Mumbai have left the residents shell-shocked. Two Mira Road road-based girls were allegedly raped, one by the father and the other by a neighbour.
In the first case, the 15-year-old girl has alleged that the abuse had been going on for over two weeks at their Kashimira road home. The girl’s mother is at her native place, reports the Times of India. The matter only came to light on Monday (December 28, 2015), when the girl raised an alarm about the abuse.
The accused was caught when the neighbours heard her screaming and called the police on him. The girl has been sent for medical examination.
In the second incident, the 22-year-old man allegedly raped his 17-year-old neighbour. The incident also took place in Kashimira and according to the police the accused gained entry into the house knowing well that the girl was alone in her house. This accused has also been arrested.
The two incidences bring to light the poor state of affairs of girl safety in the city. In a survey conducted by the NGO Praja Foundation, it was reported that in a span of four years (2011-15), there has been a 290 percent increase in rape cases in the city.
