Rain or Shine, This Springfield Student Becomes an Unlikely Hero

A video clip that has since gone viral shows Soon Hwee Tze, a student from Springfield Secondary, holding up an umbrella to shelter alighting passengers from the relentless rain at a bus stop.

During a heavy downpour, one Springfield student took it upon himself to extend a helping hand.

The incident, which touched thousands of hearts, was first uploaded on the “sgfollowsall” Instagram account on September 13 and has garnered close to 90,000 likes.

The video shows the bespectacled boy standing by the curb at a bus stop along the Tampines Expressway before Punggol Road. He shelters passengers alighting from the rear door of a bus with his umbrella, all while getting drenched himself.

Springfield Student Gets MP Recognition for Kindness

Hwee Tze’s act of kindness was brought to the attention of Mr Baey Yam Keng, an MP for Tampines GRC.

In a Facebook post, Mr Baey revealed that his team invited Hwee Tze to join them at a networking session at the Caring Carnival on November 4. The event is part of the annual Caring Commuter Week, aimed at promoting a more caring commuter culture.

At the event, Hwee Tze received a commendation letter from Mr Baey. The Springfield student shared that he stayed on to shelter passengers from not just one, but six buses!

“This is an example that every one of us, regardless of age or gender, can play a part in making commutes much more pleasant,” Mr Baey said.

Many netizens have showered Hwee Tze with compliments, applauding his actions. One of them wrote: “This is truly a well-brought-up boy. I would be so proud of him as a parent.”

Hwee Tze’s father and teacher were also invited to the networking session, adding to the sense of community pride in the young man’s actions.

This Springfield student’s act of kindness has become an inspiring story, reminding us all of the difference we can make in the world with simple acts of kindness.
