It was just an insect bite and Singapore actress Quan Yi Fong initially chose to neglect it. But soon the area got so swollen that it caused her leg muscles to go weak.

Eventually, the actress had to undergo surgery.

Quan Yi Fong recently shared about the incident on Facebook. The insect bite (on her right leg) apparently happened during a work shoot.

The area got swollen up after a few days leading to pain and difficulty in walking. Quan had to get it operated as there was an infection. She ended up being hospitalised for 3 days.

Thankfully, the actress is feeling much better now and plans to return to work soon.

Treating insect and bug bites

Insect and bug bites are a part and parcel of tropical living. However, in some cases like Quan Yi Fong’s, they can get complicated. Here are some precautions to take.

In case of an insect bite:

  • Remove the stinger (for honeybee stings). Scrape the area with a fingernail or credit card to remove it. Don’t pinch the stinger with your fingers or tweezers — that can inject more venom.
  • Wash the bite or sting with mild soap and water.
  • Remove any tight jewellery from the area of the bite or sting. It could be hard to get off once the area swells.
  • Ice the area for 10 minutes and then remove the ice for 10 minutes. Then repeat.
  • If the sting was on an arm or leg, elevate the area.
  • In case of pain, use pain relief medicine. If you have any concerns about the medicine or dosage for children, it is best to discuss with your paediatrician first.
  • An antihistamine formulated for children may help with swelling and itch. Again, it is best to talk to a pediatrician before using an antihistamine in infants or toddlers.
  • Apply a mixture of baking soda and water or calamine lotion for itch.
