Motherhood is such a phenomenal experience. It’s a blessing to be in a space where you bring a life into this world. And while the journey of pregnancy is difficult, the reward outweighs the hardships.

For Felicia Seet, a mum of two in Singapore, pregnancy meant body changes and lifestyle changes for the kids. “It used to be the career first but now family comes first,” the mum says. “I feel physically and mentally drained but emotionally fulfilled.”

That’s a feeling, mum of one, Nur Diyanah Atiqah binte Azeman shares as well. She recalls her pregnancy as, “physically exhausting, mentally draining, emotionally challenging but spiritually blessed.”

Mum of a toddler, Rayne Teo says pregnancy left her “more tired physically and more emotional.” But she feels loved even when simply looking at her newborn.

As much as we’d want to romanticise the joy of motherhood, there’s no denying that mums brave a journey riddled with physical, mental, and emotional challenges. And this doesn’t end at the end of the ninth month.

The postpartum period brings a newer set of challenges for new mums that are both physically and mentally demanding. Your body is still recovering and there’s still some time before you begin to look and feel yourself again. This can be a trying time for you personally and with little help from friends and family.

For many new mums, the postpartum period can be about weight gain or weight loss, stress, anxiety, and even hair loss. In fact, it’s normal to lose hair months after having a baby and that's why there are postpartum hair loss products.

Excessive Hair Loss During The Postpartum Period

In Nur’s case, she suffered excessive hair fall after the birth of her third child. While hair fall was the norm after her first two pregnancies as well, it was a little extra after the most recent one. “My scalp is also very dry, flaky and itchy. When I can't control myself, I would scratch uncontrollably and flakes would be everywhere,” she says.

Meanwhile, Felicia noticed thinner hair and hair loss during the fourth or fifth-month mark after giving birth for both of her pregnancies. Rayne too noticed hair loss after the fourth month in the postpartum period.

Hair loss during the postpartum phase occurs due to falling estrogen levels in the new mum. It’s a temporary concern that’s most evident after the fourth month of childbirth and usually corrects on its own after one year.

Superficial Standards Of Beauty Affect Our Self-Esteem

But for some mums, this can be a trying period. It can take a toll on your morale and self-esteem, especially when everything already feels in shambles. It can further push you towards depression and anxiety, which only make it more difficult to retrace your steps back to good health.

Even our culture makes it difficult for women to accept hair loss even if it’s a temporary issue. A woman’s hair is often associated with beauty, youth and pride.

So when you lose hair, it indicates that the new mums are losing their beauty. You may no longer feel attractive to yourself. And you build up this notion that you aren’t attractive to men either who hold women in some unnecessarily high beauty standards.

And that’s exactly where  Mama’s Choice Hair Care Series has been coming in handy for our new mums.

When Felicia began losing hair around four months after childbirth, she also began taking more supplements and nutrients. The mum then tried Mama’s Choice Hair Care Series and her first impression has been positive.

“First impression was how good it smells, it makes my hair feel soft and moisturised. Hair fall seems to have reduced.”

Meanwhile, Nur has been rather cautious of using the right product on her scalp. The mum has already undergone various products to see which one works best for her. She is now about to begin her journey of using Mama’s Choice Haircare products and we can’t wait to hear about the results from her.

For Rayne though, dealing with hair loss meant for more drastic measures. The mum cut her hair short and switched to Mama’s Choice hair loss shampoo.

“I really like the smell and it keeps my hair clean and not oily but also not drying it out like other hair loss shampoo,” she says.

The good news is that excessive shedding is temporary and most women see hair return to its normal condition by the first year of your child’s birth. But what you can do during those months is prepare yourself better to handle hair loss.
