Oral hygiene has cosmetic as well as health benefits. It is important to devote enough time and effort to keep your teeth and gums in good condition. But if for whatever reason, frequenting the dentist as much as you need to is just an impossible commitment you can adhere to, I think I may have a solution just for you.

Why is Oral Hygiene Important?

But first, why are we talking about this? Well, because oral hygiene is important. Your teeth give you a great smile and personality. In simple terms, good oral hygiene gives you fresh breath and confidence to face the world. It helps you ward-off diseases connected to oral infections. For these very reasons, dentists recommend brushing twice a day and flossing.

But the real effectivity of brushing your teeth for good oral hygiene lies in ‘how’ you brush. The quality of brushing versus the quantity i.e. number of times. And it just about the frequency and the motions you do when brushing—everything from what kind of brush, how hard your brushing and if you’re brushing correctly plays a part.

For the longest time, back from when I was using a manual toothbrush to until moving to an electronic one, I thought I was doing enough. But that’s until I got to use Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Electric Toothbrush. In a nutshell, if you ever remember how squeaky clean your mouth felt every time you went for some dental cleaning, that’s how clean my whole mouth feels every time I brush. So if you want the same brushing experience I’ve been getting for weeks now, read on for my review of this product.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Electric Toothbrush Review: It’s More Than Just a Toothbrush

If you have been facing hygiene issues with your old manual or electric toothbrush, it is time to give this new product a try. This is more of an electronic gadget than just a toothbrush. I was quite impressed by its features and could not resist writing this Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Electric Toothbrush review. Here are its basic features:

  • The Brush Handle and Brush Heads
You get a lightweight smooth handle with power button and modes of brushing displayed on it. There are three brush heads and a tongue cleaner (which to me is such a bonus!). The brush heads have microchips that smartly communicate with the handle as soon as fitted. This automatically chooses the appropriate mode and brushing duration. If you want some other setting, you have to manually override it. The bristles have colour markers that fade as much as you use them to indicate whether it’s time to change your brush heads. (Just in case, the rule of thumb is to replace the brush heads you use every 3 months).

Each box comes with 1 x C3 Premium Plaque Control, 1 x G3 Premium Gum Care, 1 x W3 Premium White and 1 xTongueCare+ tongue brush. | Image source: theAsianparent

The brush heads come with bristle covers, too—which means you can keep your brush head clean and ready for use every single time, even when travelling.

  • USB Charging Travel Case
Speaking of travel, this toothbrush package comes with completely compact and well-sealed travel case with grooves for the brush handle and two brush heads. A single full charge allows you to use the toothbrush for two weeks, but if you run low on battery while travelling, the deluxe case comes with a USB cable and adapter plug.

  • Charger, Stand and Glass
The charger comes with a conveniently long cable. There is a plastic stand to charge the brush. The thick and heavy glass is useful to ensure your toothbrush stays upright. You can also use it as a rinsing glass as well as a charging stand—it offers wireless charging.

  • Technology at its best
Welcome a toothbrush that can actually be connected through a Bluetooth. Unlike usual issues with connectivity, this connects smoothly with both iPhone and Android phones. And the app? It’s not just about keeping track. It also guides you about correct methods of brushing too.

The Bluetooth helps you identify the mistakes in your way of brushing through warning messages on your phone. Also, it creates a mouth map that you get to see on your phone screen. You also see the missed areas or bleeding gums or even plaque formation displayed on the mouth map.

A light flashing at the base of the handle also indicates hard-brushing or too much movement. There is a default setting of 2 minutes on the timer—which to me was more than enough. At the end of two minutes, you can view your mouth map to check if all areas are covered. If not, start cleaning.

Are There Any Downsides?

Let’s face it, even great things come with setbacks sometimes. For this product, luckily, it’s not much.

Let us start with the technology sync. The timer setting is for 24 hours which means that if someday you brush after midnight, your app will show a missed session, and maybe three sessions the next day—so if you’re a night owl like me, your data might be inaccurate in some days because of this.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Electric Toothbrush Review: Unfortunately, its clock doesn’t follow your body clock.

Though you have three different brush heads to use according to your preference, if you like super soft bristles, this may not be the one for you. For me personally, it took a couple of brushes and setting the brush intensity to low before I was completely comfortable with brushing with it.

If you have been using manual toothbrushes, handling an electric one is a new experience. And if you were using another electric toothbrush, this is going to take some adjustment. Unlike usual electric brushes, it does not have a rotating motion, but it vibrates. The downside of vibration could be that for people with tooth sensitivity, it can be quite painful.

And finally, with all these features and gadgets, it’s easy to assume that the pricing may be higher than what most people would be comfortable with. At S$399, when compared to other electric toothbrushes, this can be quite expensive. But honestly, the features the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart toothbrush come with justify this as a good investment for your oral hygiene. If you’re opting for a simpler, more affordable option, you can try the normal Philips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush which comes with most of the Smart version’s features minus the premium. Here’s a pro-tip, if you buy it from Amazon, you can get it at just S$359!

And for mums, if you’re looking at buying your kid his/her own electronic toothbrush, you’d be happy to know Philips has a Sonicare toothbrush for kids for just S$99!

Here’s a recap:

Philips presents its high-end Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Electric toothbrush with 3+ brush heads and 5 modes. This has used technology to advantage by offering an app to help super clean oral hygiene. It manages to point out missed-out areas or wrong brushing habits. You can choose whichever brush head and mode setting most suits you. For example, if you are comfortable with sensitive mode without having a sensitivity issue, go ahead.

The wireless charging, comfortable maintenance, portability and flexible cleaning systems make this an appropriate hygiene tool. It is going to change the way you have been taking care of your teeth and gums. So if oral hygiene is of utmost importance to you, and it should, I recommend investing on this tool—not only does it provide squeaky clean feel after every brush, it may even reduce your trips to the dentist going forward!
