Phase 1 of P1 Registration Commences for Children With Enrolled Siblings

Phase 1 is the first of five phases. This applies to prospective students with enrolled siblings in school. All children who fall under this category have guaranteed spots in the school of their choice.

The first phase of the current year’s Primary 1 registration begins at 9:00 AM on the 29th of June. Meanwhile, the applications conclude at 4:30 PM on Thursday.

The entire registration exercise will happen online; it has always been an online registration for the past two years. Along with this, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said that there would be no in-person registration at schools.

For the current year, more Primary 1 places will be set aside for prospective applicants. It is for the children who do not qualify for priority admission. The number of places dedicated to this group will be doubled to 40.

According to MOE, these places will be parked under Phase 2c of the annual exercise. They aim to prioritise those who are living nearby.

For the revamped P1 registration, MOE combined Phase 2A(1) and Phase 2A(2) into a single Phase 2A.

It only means that children whose parents are in the alumni association will no longer have priority over others. They will now compete in the same phase as those with parents or siblings who used to study in the school.

Additionally, combining both phases into a simplified Phase 2A would help preserve access for Phase 2A2 registrants. Those who are in Phase 2A(2) registrants were the ones who might otherwise have no spots left.

MOE decided to merge two phases of the Primary 1 exercise – 2A(1) and 2A(2). As mentioned, children whose parents are members of schools’ alumni associations will no longer have priority over others. They now need to compete in the same phase as those with parents or siblings who used to study there.

Additionally, the number of places for children with no affiliation with schools, those who are under Phase 2c,  doubled.

“Where some parents may be concerned about the home-school distance change, as this could mean more competition for places at a particular school, we hope the doubling of reserved places at Phase 2C would help address such concerns,” says the ministry.

In relation to this, the MOE also aims to enable more children who live nearby and have no prior links to the school to obtain a place. They want to ensure that schools remain accessible to children without a previous connection.

Primary Registration and Balloting

In 2021, Phase 1 of P1 registration garnered a multitude of applications in 11 schools. In truth, registrants filled more than half of the available slots. Concerning this, Phase 2c has the most number of schools got to a ballot throughout the years.

In the current years, parents may face changes in terms of balloting. The new system aims to cater to late enrollees and those who failed to grab earlier slots.

Additionally, parents must show the school the child’s immunisation records on reporting day. They need to do it after the registration exercise.

Meanwhile, parents should prepare to submit additional documents like proof of parent’s alumni status. Depending on the phase, they will only have to submit it if the school requests it.

To make it easier for parents to search for primary schools nearby, you may use the Ministry of Education’s school finder tool.
