Meta announced that parental supervision tools on Messenger are now globally available. The tools will allow parents to see how their teens are using Messenger, in a way that respects their privacy.
The first set of parental supervision tools on Messenger will allow parents and guardians to get updates on changes to their teen’s Messenger contact list, as well as their teen’s privacy and safety settings. They can also get notified if their teen reports someone (if the teen chooses to share that information), view who can message their teen (only their friends, friends of friends, or no one) and if their teen changes this setting, and also who can see their teen’s Messenger stories.
Meta made the announcement at their recent Youth Safety Summit in Singapore, which was held from 29 to 30 August and brought together safety experts from across Asia Pacific, including BRAC, ECPAT International, Netsafe, UNICEF, and the Stairway Foundation.
“Over the years, we’ve developed more than 30 tools to support families, including supervision tools that help parents and teens work together to manage teens’ time on our apps. We’re committed to making sure teens have age-appropriate experiences across our technologies, and we’ll continue working with safety experts as we build tools for young people and their families,” said Antigone Davis, Meta’s Global Head of Safety, at the sidelines of the Youth Safety Summit in Singapore.
These supervision tools are in addition to other features and protections that Meta has launched over the years, including tools that help teens have safer and more private experiences, further restricting the options advertisers have to reach teens as well as the information that used to show ads to teens, and providing teens with more tools to better manage their experience on Instagram.
