One Mother's Brave Post About Having a Child with Down Syndrome Will Leave You in Tears

She simply wanted her son to have a friend his own age. Her post went viral, with tens of thousands of shares and overwhelming responses.

Having a child with Down syndrome can be challenging, especially when it comes to finding lasting friendships for them. Donna Herter, a mother from St. Charles, Missouri, recently shared her heart-wrenching story on social media, and her post has since gone viral.

Her request for a friend for her son, Christian Bowers, who has Down syndrome, has been met with an outpouring of kindness from strangers around the world.

Donna Herter shared her post on Facebook during a lull in her overnight nursing shift last month. She offered to pay anyone between the ages of 20-28 $80 for two hours of spending time with Christian, playing video games in his room. She simply wanted her son to have a friend his own age.

Her post went viral, with tens of thousands of shares and overwhelming responses. People flooded her inbox with messages, offering to become friends with Christian without any expectation of payment, surprising Herter with the kindness of strangers, who she described as “mind-blowing.”

But the story doesn’t end there. A local nonprofit organization, STL Youth Sports Outreach, was moved by Herter’s post and surprised Christian with gifts that included a 65-inch flat-screen TV, a new TV stand, a wireless soundbar, and tickets to a St. Louis Blues hockey game, which thrilled Christian and overwhelmed his mother with the kindness shown to her son.
