Students who took the GCE ‘O’ Levels exams in 2014 received their results slips yesterday (12 January 2015).

As announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE), almost all (99.9%) of the 30,964 candidates received at least one or more passes. The total percentage of passes was similar to that of last year.

Based on records on the MOE website, a total of 29,705 (95.9%) received 3 or more passes. On the other hand, 25,789 (83.3%) candidates received 5 or more passes. The number of passes this year was the highest ever received since 1995.

Student success

Several success stories were featured on ChannelNews Asia about how students overcame various challenges to achieve stellar ‘O’ Level results. Despite the differences in these stories, the common factors that attributed to their success boiled down to the following:

  • Support and motivation from their parents
  • Dedicated teachers who went the extra mile to stay back after school hours (and even weekends) to coach and revise with the students

School success

Besides the students, the release of the ‘O’ Levels results yesterday was a day of celebration for various schools in Singapore.

According to our partners at EduMatters, Juying Secondary in Jurong West saw its students achieving the best results in 10 years. A total of 85.7% of them received at least 5 passes.

Edgefield Secondary School also saw its first batch of graduating students achieving a 93.3% average (5 passes or more). This results is well above the national average of 83.3%. Principal Leong Kok Kee commented that this was “a good start” and that the school will “continue to develop its strengths”.

Meanwhile, Balestier Hill saw its Sec 4 Express cohort achieved a 84.4% average (5 passes or more) and the 5 Normal achieving 68.4% (5 passes or more). The 5 Normal results was a significant increase of 25.2% from its average of 42.2% last year.

theAsianparent would like to congratulate all students – as well as their parents and teachers – for doing exceptionally well in the 2014 ‘O’ Level exams!
