Cheap Ways To Celebrate Halloween

27 Oct, 2013
1. Movie marathon

1. Movie marathon

There are loads of movies you can watch with your entire family to soak in the spooky atmosphere of Halloween. Depending on the age of your child, we recommend these classics, which you can rent from any video rental shops.

a. Casper Who wouldn’t love cute ’ole Casper, the friendly ghost? Get the family together on Halloween to watch Casper the friendly ghost, serve an array of Halloween-themed snacks that we will teach you how to make later in this article!

b. Edward Scissorhands This is a Tim Burton classic. The story of Edward Scissorhands is a heart-wrenching story of love and social intolerance for those different. Try having a Tim Burton movie marathon by following up with The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride – they’re a lot more light-hearted than the title suggests!

c. The Phantom of the Opera This is a story of love lost and tragedy reigns. Best suited for older children above 12 years old. A good show if your kid is interested in musicals – get them started on the classics when they’re young!
2. Baking

2. Baking

Here’s a cheat to easy baking on Halloween – pop by the store and pick up a couple of boxes of Betty Crocker’s Angel Cake and Devil’s Food Cake Mix along with some tubs of ready made vanilla icing. The cake mixes make moist, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes in under an hour.

You can get the kids in on the stirring and mixing but the real fun is in the icing. Colour the icing with Halloween in mind – use reds, oranges and greens!

3. Carve a jack-o-lantern

3. Carve a jack-o-lantern

Even though carving pumpkins can be a messy process, kids usually have great fun playing and messing around with the pumpkin mash. All you need is a bit of strength and a good, sharp pumpkin carving knife. If you want to reduce the spooky effect, you can carve a pumpkin with a friendly face.

You can get pumpkins at any local supermarket, although Cold Storage outlets have a better selection of the larger ones. If you have never carved a pumpkin before, don't fret.

4. Storytelling

4. Storytelling

In this day and age of television and smart phones, we may be losing the age-old joy of simple, story telling. Use Halloween to get the kids to appreciate this simple activity with some read aloud Halloween books.

Dim the lights, light some candles, bring out the cupcakes you made and start reading. Put on your best ‘spooky voice’ for added effect!
5. Play dress-up

5. Play dress-up

You don’t have to spend a whole lot of money renting elaborate costumes or buying expensive ones that the kids are sure to outgrow by next year. Halloween can be used as a time for family bonding, ask your children what they would like to be for Halloween. Now head out to spotlight or Bras Basah to pick up fabrics and props!

Spend a couple of days with the family pulling together fun and creative outfits. The fun really is in spending time as a family, making outfits for one another. You will be surprised at how nifty your kids are getting!
