Three More Primary School Students Test Positive For COVID-19 In Singapore

More primary school students from different schools have tested positive for COVID-19.

More cases of Covid in children under 10 years old have been detected in Singapore. Three primary school students from different schools have tested positive for COVID-19. These students are from Yuhua Primary School, Catholic High School (Primary), and CHIJ (Katong) Primary.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) made the announcement on Tuesday (18 May). They added that the sources of infection in all three children were not from their schools.

1. Student from Yuhua Primary School

A seven-year-old student from Yuhua Primary School tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday (17 May). He was last in school on 14 May when he was still feeling well.

In a press release on 18 May, the Ministry of Health says the boy was a family member and a household contact of two previous positive cases.

The student was placed in quarantine on 15 May and developed a fever, runny nose and cough the next day. He was tested for COVID-19 on 16 May, and his tests came out positive the following day.

All those who were in close contact with the case in school will also be quarantined and will undergo swab tests.

2. Student from Catholic High School (Primary)

The next case is a student from Catholic High School (Primary) who also tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. The seven-year-old was last in school on 12 May when he was still well.

MOE says he was placed in quarantine since he attended classes run by an infected private tutor at Learning Point Tuition Centre at Parkway Centre.

He developed a cough on 12 May and was tested for infection on the same day but his results first came out negative for COVID-19.

When he developed a fever on 15 May and was tested again, his test results then came back positive on 17 May.

MOE says all students and school staff who were in close contact with him have been quarantined and will undergo swab tests as well.

3. Student from CHIJ (Katong) Primary

Another 7-year-old primary student from CHIJ (Katong) Primary tested positive for COVID-19 on the same day as the other two students.

She was last in school on 11 May when she was still feeling well. But she was placed in quarantine on 14 May after attending the same external student care centre as an earlier confirmed case from St Stephen’s School. The student care centre was Seedlings World Student Care @ Frankel.

This St Stephen’s School student also attended classes run by the infected teacher from Learning Point Tuition Centre.

The girl from CHIJ (Katong) Primary developed a fever and a sore throat on 16 May and was tested for COVID-19 the following day. Her test results also came back positive on 17 May.

MOE adds as per CNA, “As (the CHIJ student) has been isolated during the infectious period, there were no close contacts in her school that would need to be placed on quarantine order.”

MOE also says the three students have pending serology test results.

“Beyond existing safe management measures, the affected schools have implemented additional precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff, minimise the risk of transmission, and prevent the development of school-based clusters. This includes the thorough cleaning and disinfection of school premises,” MOE stated.
