A video of an 11-year-old Meghan Markle protesting a sexist advertisement is going viral online. The soon-to-be member of the royal family is now the darling of social media after it was discovered that at a very young age, she was already vocal about gender equality and various issues that concern women.

11-Year-old Meghan Markle successfully protested a sexist advertisement

In the video, Meghan can be seen along with her classmates assessing various commercials for a class project.

An advertisement for dishwashing soap caught her attention because of the gender-specific language that it used, saying “women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.”

Meghan said “I don’t think it’s right for kids to grow up thinking these things that just mom does everything.” She adds, “It’s always ‘mom does this,’ and ‘mom does that.”

With encouragement from her father, she also wrote to Procter & Gamble in order to ask them to change the ad. The amazing thing is that the company listened to her concerns, and fixed their sexist advertisement.

The video of 11-year-old Meghan Markle and her classmates was featured on Nick News, a television show back in 1993.

Linda Ellerbee, the host of Nick News, shares, “It was absolutely clear that this young woman was strong in her beliefs, it didn’t matter if she was 11 years old, she believed in women, she believed in her own power, and she wasn’t afraid to reach out and say: ‘I want my power.”

Gender equality is important in the family

Equality is something that all moms and dads should practice in their marriage and in their families.

Gone are the days where dads are the only ones who work while mums stay at home and take care of the kids. Nowadays, mums and dads do whatever they have to do in order to care for their family, whether it means that dads have to be the ones to stay at home, and the moms are the ones who go to work.

When it comes to kids, gender equality is just as important since it helps teach them respect and understanding, plus knowing more about gender equality helps them become empowered to follow their dreams whatever those may be.

Here are some ways by which you can teach your kids more about gender equality:

  1. Share the work equally. Gender shouldn’t dictate what chores your kids do, and be sure to assign the same amount of work to all of your children.
  2. When it comes to the freedom that your children have, make sure that you treat all of your children equally, without any discrimination.
  3. Do your best to not favor one child over the other when it comes to making family decisions.
  4. Teach them to be respectful of anyone, regardless of gender.
  5. Lead by example, and practice equality in your marriage so that your kids can learn from your example.
