Man Steals Friend’s Wedding Gift Money

A man in China destroys his friendship when he steals his friend’s wedding gift money. He accomplished this by going to the groom’s family home while the wedding occurred elsewhere.

The man’s surname is Song; he was from Shaanxi province in northwestern China. On the 30th of May, he was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison. Aside from that, he needs to pay 3,000 yuan (US$450) as a fine for stealing 25,000 yuan (US$3,700).

How the Wedding Gift Money Theft Occurred

Authorities named the groom’s surname as Zhou. He and his bride chose a local hotel as the venue for the wedding dinner.

On the wedding day, Song went to Zhou’s house instead of showing up at the venue. He sneaks into the bedroom of Zhou’s father, and no one notices him.

After successfully breaking in, he began rifling through the room’s contents. He was able to notice a wardrobe with a locked drawer and forced it open. Song found a substantial amount of money intended as a wedding gift for the couple.

The man split the money and hid 3,700 yuan (US$555) in a box near the bedroom’s balcony. He does that before leaving the bedroom with the rest of the money.

After the incident, he went to the venue for the wedding banquet with Zhou’s family. Song gave 500 yuan (US$75) to the newlywed couple as a wedding gift; he took it from the money he stole.

Later, he posed as a generous friend by lending Zhou 5,000 yuan, also using the stolen money.

The Local Police Arrested the Man

Even after the wedding, Song did not stop spending the money he stole. He was even trying to maintain the illusion that he was using his own money.

Unfortunately, his illusions did not last for too long. Later that night, the local police arrested Song.

Because of the incident, they discovered that Song had a previous criminal record. Along with this, they found out the Song had experienced imprisonment twice already. Once for a 10-month sentence in 2018 and again for one year in 2020.

Netizens’ Reaction to the Theft

Stories like this tend to go viral on social media nowadays. What happened during the wedding incident captivated social media users in China.

Many people could understand Song’s guts to risk prison by stealing such a small amount of money. According to them, he even steals it from an acquaintance in a blatant fashion.

One top comment said: “What did he think? Steal the money from his classmate, then lend the money back to him, and no one would notice?” Another one expressed an opinion, “It was really embarrassing. From now on, it’s probable that Song will live like he has no classmates or friends.”

“Couldn’t he earn 25,000 yuan in a year and nine months? Now, he is in prison,” said another.

Coping With Losing Trust in a Friendship

Most people take time to assess their friends before fully trusting them. It’s not something we give easily. Others find it hard to build trust with almost anyone they know. Furthermore, rebuilding trust in a broken friendship isn’t always possible.

Trust is a crucial ingredient in all successful relationships. When someone breaks your trust, especially a friend or someone you value, it is not that easy to rebuild it again.

Look Back on Your Friendship

Before you decide to cut off a friend, look back on the events that transpired. Assess the reasons why you came to this decision in the first place. Afterwards, ask advice from other friends if the friendship with this certain person is worth saving.

Rebuild It

If it’s worth saving, then, go for it. However, rebuilding the trust you once shared takes time. Do not expect everything to be okay overnight.

Cut Ties if Needed

A true friend will support and care about your happiness. If a friend betrays you and breaks your trust in a major way, bear in mind that you don’t necessarily have to mend the relationship.

Admit Your Faults

If you broke your friend’s trust, you must admit your faults. Afterwards, you need to allow that friend to forgive you. Humble yourself and take responsibility if you want to mend your relationship with them. Start with an apology and prepare to face the consequences.
