Kindergarten should be a place of fun and learning. It should be a safe space, where parents feel secure enough to leave their kids. But sadly this is not always the case. Another new child abuse scandal has come to light. In the video clip, a kindergarten teacher slaps students and scolds them, all while the abuse is filmed by a co-worker.

Kindergarten teacher slaps students one by one

The horrifying incident happened in a kindergarten in a village in Ningxia, China. In the video, the teacher violently strikes the boy’s hand with a brush while other students wait in line for their turn.

Since the horrifying footage has come to light, the abusive teacher has been sacked. The co-worker who filmed the abuse has also been fired.

Sadly, this is not the only alarming case of child abuse to emerge from China. Just last year, an abusive teacher in Hebei province was exposed. And one of the most disturbing to date is when a famous preschool came under fire for allegedly drugging and molesting students

As a parent, it’s natural to be enraged and even frightened when hearing about cases such as these. And they don’t just happen in rural China. In Singapore back in March 2018, a three-year-old girl was allegedly abused while at preschool.

  • You notice unexplained wounds, bruises, or injuries more and more frequently when your child arrives home.
  • They are aloof, scared, or even defiant towards teachers or day care staff.
  • Your child struggles or throws a fit when you bring them to school or daycare.
  • They are exhibiting behaviour unusual to their character — being extremely distant or clingy — while at home.
  • Your child has trouble sleeping or is excessively frightened of being left alone.

How should you respond if you suspect abuse is happening?

  • If you notice any of these warning signs, do not be afraid to express your fears to the school principal. Hopefully, your fears aren’t proven true. But the first step to uncovering abuse is speaking up about it.
  • Once you confirm that abuse is happening, call the police (999) and relevant authorities such as Singapore’s Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA).
  • Reach out to a child protection specialist centre to help you decide how to best move forward to find both healing and justice.
