The importance of  celebrating mums who breastfeed in public

Not only is this story inspiring, it highlights the importance of celebrating breastfeeding mums who nurse in public even at the risk of being shamed or judged.

Mums are under immense pressure to care for their kids in the best way possible, so the last thing they need is to be judged for caring for their child in the most natural and beautiful way.

Sadly, shaming still happens worldwide.

One mum was shamed by her own parents for choosing to nurse in public and another was even almost arrested for it.

So it is a good thing that celebrities like Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel have spoken out against this type of shaming that is still rampant to this day.

“Many women today are shamed for breastfeeding in public, or even kicked out of public places for feeding their children,” Swanepoel wrote on Instagram. “I have been made to feel the need to cover up and somewhat shy to feed my baby in public places.”

“Breastfeeding is not sexual, it’s natural…”

“Breastfeeding is not sexual, it’s natural,” she emphasizes. “Those who feel it is wrong to feed your child in public need to get educated on the benefits breastfeeding has on mother and child and intern on society as a whole.”

Breastfeeding mums need support. They deserve to be commended and not shamed by society.

The next time you see a breastfeeding mum in public, we should not make her feel like what she is doing is shameful.

We should celebrate this Brazilian woman and all the other mums like her, who despite their own doubts or discomfort, have devoted their whole being to making sure their little ones grow happy and healthy!
