On 16 September, IKEA announced a worldwide recall on its Gunggung children’s swing. This came after the Swedish furniture retailer received reports from parents saying that their children had been injured while using the product.

IKEA further commented that the suspension fittings on the Gunggung children’s swing “do not live up to IKEA quality requirements”.

No reports of injuries from using the IKEA Gunggung swing has been made in Singapore.

According to Channel NewsAsia, 87 sets of the children’s swing have been sold in Singapore since it was made available on 1st April 2014. The Company then took this product off their shelves on 14 August 2014 after receiving 4 reports worldwide of the suspension fittings breaking. One of these reports involved an 8-year-old boy in Sweden who suffered a fracture on his leg from the fall.

Thankfully though, no unfortunate incidents have been reported in Singapore.

Ms Cindy Andersen, Business Area Manager for children’s products at IKEA said: “We develop products intended to stimulate children’s creativity and natural need for physical play. Children don’t think about safety when playing, so we need to do that when we develop products. Our mindset at IKEA is that we only sell products that we would give to our own children.

“However, sometimes even though we have tested according to applicable standards and legislation, we make mistakes. We are therefore recalling the Gunggung swing to avoid any more incidents.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however safety is always a top priority for IKEA.”
