How I Managed to Relieve Stress During and After Pregnancy

How I Managed to Relieve Stress During and After Pregnancy

Sometimes, things can get overwhelming and you really want to shut out the noise, focus and re-prioritise. Using noise cancelling headphones made this writer a calmer person and a better mum. Find out how.

I remember being extra irritable and grumpy during my pregnancy, because my neighbours were doing some renovation work in their home and all the drilling noise was driving me crazy. I was neither able to concentrate on my work nor relax peacefully at home.

Worse, I was even finding it tough to sleep well at night. I think all my daytime stress was converting into nighttime anxiety.

One of the reasons why we tend to get so overwhelmed by noise is because, unlike our eyes, our ears are never off.

The body tends to get stressed out when there is a lot of unwanted background noise. You find it harder to focus and concentrate, and end up putting in extra effort just to block out the noise from your head.

It was my friend who suggested that I try noise cancelling headphones.

Getting Sony’s WF-1000XM4 Truly Wireless noise cancelling headphones turned out to be a great decision.

I could finally block out all the noise from my head and tune in to my thoughts, my own personal space, and focus better at work and stay calm, even when life got hectic.

I even took them with me to the delivery suite. Listening to calm, soothing music helped me relax, and ease the anxiety of labour. I was also able to focus on my breathing which helped me handle the pain a lot better.

Noise cancelling headphones made me a calmer person and a better mum

Today, as a work-from-home mum, I have discovered many more benefits to owning noise cancelling headphones.

Parenthood comes with its own set of noises and chaos and I found myself losing my cool over the silliest of reasons and getting drained too soon. Especially during the pandemic, when our homes got turned into offices and schools.

Sometimes, things can get overwhelming and you really want to shut out the noise, focus and re-prioritise. I realised that my noise anxiety was getting to me, and I had to regain my calm real quick.

Wearing these headphones helped me disconnect from the chaos and hold on to my sanity. I was finally able to get some much needed me-time, to simply be with myself and do the things I liked, like listening to my favourite music (and not “Baby Shark” on loop) or podcast.

And, I could finally get back to my workout without worrying about waking up the kids. The headphones are easy to wear, and the voice quality and fit are pretty good too.

Also, I’ve noticed that I’m way more productive and focussed at work when I’m using these headphones. They really help to block out unwanted noise during those important conference calls.

Then again, we mums need our antennas as well, don’t we – we are constantly toggling between ‘mum mode’ and ‘me mode’! We need to know what our little ones are up to, to make sure they are safe and not in any sort of trouble. The best part about Sony’s WF-1000XM4 Truly Wireless headphones is that they have an ambient sound mode. With a single touch, you can let ambient sound in, and reconnect with your surroundings.

I also found the Speak-to-Chat function really useful. My little girl never runs short of doubts  and thanks to this function, I don’t have to remove my headphones every time I need to answer her questions. As soon as I speak to someone, Speak-to-Chat automatically pauses the music and lets in ambient sound so I can conduct a conversation. And once my chat is over, the music starts playing again!

The battery life is good too – up to 24 hours (with charging case). If you have forgotten to charge, and are in a hurry, just 5 minutes of quick charging gives you up to 60 minutes of play time.
