The Amazing Health Benefits Of Manuka Honey

6 Mar, 2015

The health benefits of Manuka honey are pretty amazing. From curing acne to soothing coughs, the list goes on. Read more in this gallery...

Manuka honey is produced by bees that pollinate the flowers of the Manuka bush found in New Zealand. While you might have already heard about it, you may not know what makes it so special.

According to WebMD, all types of honey have natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but Manuka honey has high levels of another antibacterial compound called methylglyoxal (MG), which makes it more potent than other kinds of honey.

Please note that giving any type of honey to a child under one year old is unsafe due to the risk of a condition called botulism. Also, if you are allergic to bee stings, diabetic, have a heart condition or had tuberculosis, it is advisable to consult a doctor before taking honey.

Keep clicking next to learn about eight amazing health benefits of Manuka honey!

Because of its strong antibacterial properties, Manuka honey is well regarded as a way of treating minor burns and wounds.

It can be directly applied to a wound or burn, which research shows can even be more effective than using antibacterial creams.

2. For good oral health

Manuka honey’s amazing benefits extend to oral health too.

Studies have shown that its superior antimicrobial properties can significantly reduce the occurrence of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and plaque.

Apply directly on to your gums immediately after brushing your teeth. You can also take a spoonful of active Manuka honey once a day and keep it in your mouth, making sure it penetrates between your teeth and gums.

3. For acne, scars and blemishes

3. For acne, scars and blemishes

This honey’s strong antibacterial properties are put to work when applied on acne. It is also great at clearing up acne scars and other skin blemishes.

To use, cleanse your skin well and apply the honey lightly (about one tablespoon) on wet skin. Leave it on for at least 15 to 20 minutes, then wash off with warm water and pat dry. If needed, apply a moisturiser.

4. An effective remedy for coughs and colds and to boost immunity

4. An effective remedy for coughs and colds and to boost immunity

Medical experts agree that Manuka honey is an effective and safe home remedy for coughs and colds, as its healing properties help calm inflamed membranes.

Their recommendations are backed by a study (Sarinaan, K., 2010) that involved 139 children. Honey beat out dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant) and diphenhydramine (an antihistamine) in soothing night-time cough.

A teaspoon of Manuka honey a day is all you need to bring about relief from coughs and colds. Add some cinnamon for a further healing boost. Taking a spoonful of Manuka honey a day is also acknowledged to help boost the immune system.

Chemotherapy, while being one of the most effective treatments for cancer, can also have devastating effects on the body during and following the course of treatment.

Manuka honey can help negate some of the nasty effects as shown by research.

Manuka honey can help ease the extreme discomfort brought about by acid reflux by coating the stomach and oesophagus. It also helps to heal any damages in the tissue and lining caused by the condition.

Manuka honey also helps regulate the naturally occurring good bacteria in a person’s intestines, helping with digestion and strengthening the immune system in the process.
