Her unconditional love for me…
I’ve never fully understood what unconditional love meant until I went through this episode of my life. She’s amazing. The woman who unconditionally loved me throughout the 22 years of my life, my mother. I was afraid of sharing my story as it seemed like a sign of how weak I am. However, my mum’s nobleness had inspired me to overcome my seemingly big obstacle.
Love cripples us, doesn’t it? I experienced my first love while studying Down Under. I met him when I came to Australia to study for university. He was my everything and my whole life revolved around him. For a while, life was perfect. But then, my whole world came crashing down on the day that he decided to leave me.

The breaking point
Actor Dennis Quaid once said, “When you break up, your whole identity is shattered. It’s like death”.
This in particular, was very true. I’d completely lost myself and my direction in life. I never imagined myself to be someone so weak and vulnerable. It felt like I had admitted to defeat when I decided to see a school counsellor. And then came the final blow, I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety.
I don’t know if any of you has ever felt this way before. To feel so helpless and breathless, as if you were going to die any moment. People often say you can’t depend on anyone apart from your family. Let me tell you now that this is absolutely true.

A love that knows no bounds
There are no boundaries to a mother’s love and up till today, I am absolutely amazed at just how noble my mother is. We’ve all heard stories about panicked mothers lifting cars off their trapped babies. Well my mum showed me her strength by flying from Singapore to Australia to look after me.
I remembered how worried I was on the day she arrived. I kept thinking, “Can my 60-year old mother find her way to my house in a foreign land?”
I was close to giving up on life a couple of times, until my family had decided to ask my mum to come look after me. I held on because of her.
I never appreciated the love I had from my family until this experience. My mum is so amazing. She’d learnt to use an iPhone to Skype and Whatsapp me whenever I was feeling down. It may not seem like a big deal but she’s that type of person who is so bad in technology, she can’t even operate an e-mail account.
Throughout the 3 weeks she’d accompanied me, she did all the small little things to ease my workload. From cooking dinner to washing the laundry, vacuuming, organizing my room and mostly listening to my woes.
I don’t know if I would’ve had the strength to move on with my life if it wasn’t for her. She showed me that a mother’s love is the greatest love of all. I love you Mum. I’m sorry for all the hurt I’ve caused to you.
