Since the start of the Soft Toy Campaign in 2003, donations have supported over 70 programmes in nearly 40 countries, helping eight million children worldwide. Just one Euro buys enough schoolbooks and supplies for five children!
To date, 69 million children around the world are denied their right to quality education due to poverty, disability, displacement, discrimination or cultural customs. With funds collected, UNICEF and Save the Children will be able to develop long-term programmes to provide educational supplies, teacher training and child-friendly schools. The campaign’s long-term effects are seen in villages such as in Uttar Pradesh, India where over 300,000 children now enjoy lessons in school instead of remaining in child labour.
Children from the IKEA Smales play a part
Children from the IKEA Smales community will also get a chance to contribute to the Soft Toy Campaign. The IKEA Smales is a kids’ programme for children of age four to 10 years old where members get to participate in enriching activities, interact and learn about sustainability efforts. For each soft toy redeemed using their Smalish points, the currency used in the Smales community, which are earned through activities, the IKEA Foundation will donate SGD $2 to UNICEF Malaysia. The donations will go to impoverished children living in states like Sabah. Sarawak and the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia where standards for education, sanitation and nutrition needs improvement.
