What Is Dry and Scaly Leg Skin?

According to Medical News Today, dry skin or in medical terms, xerosis, can occur in any part of the body including the feet.

It occurs when the skin layer loses moisture and cannot maintain adequate hydration.

The skin on the feet is more prone to becoming dry because this area has fewer oil glands than other parts such as the face or hands.

When skin loses moisture, it will start to become rough, cracked, flaky and itchy.

Causes of Dry and Scaly Foot Skin

Dry, scaly skin on your feet may seem like a trivial problem, but if left untreated, it can become more serious. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

1. Certain Skin Problems

Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, diabetes or thyroid disorders can cause the skin on the feet to become very dry and easily irritated.

2. Inappropriate Skin Care Products

Soaps or lotions that contain harsh chemicals such as alcohol or fragrances can cause dry skin.

Choose natural ingredients, avoid irritants and pay attention to early signs of skin changes.

3. Wearing Closed Shoes Too Long

These types of shoes trap heat and sweat. When your feet are too hot or humid, the skin is easily damaged and loses moisture.

4. Extreme Weather Changes

Temperatures that are too hot or cold can disrupt the skin’s natural moisture balance, especially on the feet.

5. Excess Weight

Excessive pressure on the feet due to weight can cause the skin to crack and become easily damaged.

6. The Aging Process

As we age, our skin naturally loses elasticity and moisture, causing the skin on our feet to become dry and rough.

Effects of Dry Foot Skin Left Untreated

If left untreated, dry skin will become increasingly cracked and itchy. You may scratch frequently without realizing it, which can cause:

  • Wounded and bleeding skin
  • Risk of bacterial infection
  • Prolonged irritation
  • Pain when wearing shoes

How to Treat Dry Leg Skin at Home

To treat and prevent dry skin on your feet, first identify the cause. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek advice from a doctor or dermatologist. However, you can also try these simple steps at home:

1. Exfoliation (exfoliation) of dead skin

Remove dead skin cells by using a natural scrub such as:

  • Sugar + honey
  • Salt + olive oil
  • Chemical-free commercial foot scrub

Do this 2-3 times a week to help soften the skin and promote new skin growth.

2. Soak Your Feet in Warm Water

Soak your feet in warm water for 10-15 minutes to:

  • Softens the skin
  • Promotes blood flow
  • Reduces tension in the legs

You can also add a little Epsom salt or essential oil such as lavender for a relaxing effect.

3. Use the Right Foot Moisturizer

Choose a foot moisturizer that:

  • Alcohol and fragrance free
  • Contains natural ingredients such as aloe vera, shea butter or coconut oil

Apply after bathing and before bed for more effective results.

4. Practice a Healthy Diet for Skin

Nutrients such as Vitamin B, C, D, E , zinc and biotin are very important for skin health. You can get them from:

  • Green vegetables
  • Citrus fruits
  • Eggs, fish, legumes and dairy

Drinking enough water is also important to maintain skin moisture from within.

5. Keep Your Nails and Toenails Clean

Long toenails can collect dirt and cause irritation. Make sure you:

  • Trim your nails regularly.
  • Shave or clean your leg hair so that it doesn’t trap sweat which can cause itchy skin.

When Should You See a Doctor?

If the skin on your feet becomes increasingly cracked, the wound bleeds, smells or oozes fluid, it may be a sign of infection. See a doctor or dermatologist immediately for further treatment.

Dry and scaly skin on your feet not only causes discomfort, but can also affect your self-confidence when you have to take off your shoes in public.
