A Journey of Determination: Balancing Law School and Work as a Domestic Helper

Witness the extraordinary journey of Ms. Jayanthi Gamage, who defied odds as a domestic helper to become a law graduate. Inspiring resilience!

In August 2023, an email bearing long-awaited news arrived in the inbox of Ms. Jayanthi Gamage, a domestic helper in Singapore. The University of London had confirmed her completion of a law degree, marking the culmination of a seven-year odyssey that traversed two countries. Kolette Lim of the *Straits Times* shares the remarkable story of Ms. Gamage, who defied the odds and pursued her passion for law while working tirelessly in a foreign land.

A Courageous Decision

Ms. Gamage’s decision to embark on this journey was not made lightly. With a job in Singapore offering financial stability twice that of her previous employment in Sri Lanka, she took the bold step of leaving her homeland in 2019 to fund her degree. Despite apprehensions about venturing into unfamiliar territory, her determination to realize her childhood dream of studying law propelled her forward. Repeated failures in the entrance exam to Sri Lanka Law College only strengthened her resolve.

Challenges Amidst Determination

Ms. Gamage’s pursuit of education was fraught with challenges. Balancing her demanding job with rigorous studies left her with little time for personal pursuits. Every dollar earned was earmarked for her degree, reflecting her unwavering commitment to her goal. Despite moments of homesickness and longing for her parents, who had always supported her aspirations despite their own limited education, she persevered.

A Race Against Time

The clock was ticking for Ms. Gamage, who had to complete her degree within eight years. Juggling her responsibilities as a domestic helper with her academic commitments proved arduous. Her first employment contract allowed her to complete only one module due to childcare duties, underscoring the obstacles she faced.

Finding Support in Unexpected Places

Amidst adversity, Ms. Gamage found an unexpected ally in Ms. Manjit Kour, her employer. Described as an “angel,” Ms. Kour not only supported Ms. Gamage’s academic pursuits but actively encouraged them. Her belief in the transformative power of education drove her to ensure that Ms. Gamage had the time and resources to excel in her studies.

Celebrating Triumphs Despite Setbacks

Despite the rejection of her visa application to attend her graduation ceremony in London, Ms. Gamage remains undeterred. Her journey has already borne fruit, leading to professional advancement and recognition of her qualifications. Her future aspirations include pursuing a master’s degree and, ultimately, realizing her dream of practising law.

Inspiring Others Through Perseverance

Ms. Gamage’s story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to individuals from all walks of life. Her unwavering determination, coupled with the support of those around her, exemplifies the power of resilience in the face of adversity. As she looks ahead to new horizons, Ms. Gamage hopes that her journey will inspire others to pursue education and achieve their dreams, regardless of age or circumstance.
