Give your child 50% more DHA!

3 min read

DHA for kids (also known as docosahexaenoic acid) is a beneficial fat that is important for the optimal development and function of the brain and eyes. Especially, during the early years of a child.

During the last trimester of fetal life and the early years of childhood, the brain goes through a period of rapid growth. The rate of growth is so rapid that the brain grows from being 25 percent of an adult weight and volume to approximately 95 percent of the weight of an adult’s brain by the age of 51.

DHA for kids: How much does your child need?

The European Food Safety Authority (ESFA) recommends that young children be given an adequate amount of 100mg3 DHA per day.

Children can synthesise DHA from natural food sources (e.g Deep-sea fish and egg) found in their daily diet.  However, the DHA intake from a child’s regular diet is insufficient.

As DHA makes up a large portion of the brain and retina of the eyes, a deficiency could slow down the development and function of these important organs.

Studies revealed that children with higher DHA levels have better mental and visual function. Children who include DHA in their daily diet also seem to have better focus and concentration, as well as improved motor skills and coordination (no clumsiness!).

What are good sources of DHA?

Babies get DHA from breastmilk, where it is found naturally. As they wean to solid foods, their intake of DHA tends to decrease. This is where a DHA-fortified growing up milk is needed to supplement their daily food intake.
