A 43-year-old Singaporean dad uses spy camera to film daughter in her room when she undresses and changes into her school uniform. He kept footage of his 13-year-old child when she specifically strips and dons new clothes. Initially, the man denied the allegations during the investigations. He claimed that putting a spy camera in the girl’s room was to monitor the victim’s studying.

Due to strong evidence, the court did not accept his defence statement. He pleaded guilty on Friday, 1st of April 2022, to two charges of voyeurism. Another charge awaits him when he returns for sentencing the following week.

The Victim and Offender’s Identities Remained Protected

Gag orders are put in place to protect the identities of both the offender and the victim. This is implemented when a judge prohibits the attorneys, parties, or witnesses in a pending lawsuit or criminal prosecution from talking about the case to the public.

During the proceedings, officials learned that the man purchased a spy camera before July 2019. The recording device he bought resembled a USB charger. It was used was able to transmit real-time footage to nearby linkable devices. The camera also allows the footage to be stored in all connected gadgets.

The Man Covertly Records His Daughter

In the early morning of the 6th of July 2020, the man decided to secretly install a camera in his daughter’s bedroom. In the first clip, he perfectly timed the period when the girl would undress in her room. She routinely changes into her school uniform at certain times before leaving for school.

To covertly film his daughter, the father hid the spy camera in the corner of her bedroom. He then made sure that the transmitted video feed was stable. To ensure this, he adjusted the direction of the device twice before he left the room.

While setting up the device, the suspect was shown on camera. Unfortunately, the man’s face was unclear in the footage.  After 10 minutes, the 13-year-old girl eventually entered the room and was recorded undressing before taking a shower. After showering, the victim dressed up in her school uniform and left. She has no idea that her father was spying on her.

Shortly after, the man retrieved the spy camera from the girl’s bedroom and saved the footage. He stored copies on his laptop and mobile phone.

The man continued to do this in the following days. He always switches off the lights in the bedroom after planting the camera in the same spot. This was his method of evading detection.

The 36-Year-Old Wife Reported the Incident

On the 21st of August 2020, the man’s crime finally came to light. His 36-year-old wife files a police report regarding the incident. She informed the police about what she had discovered on his husband’s laptop.

The mother first noticed the clips while using her husband’s laptop on the 2nd of August 2020. She then saw her daughter in various states of undress after viewing one of the recordings.

Mum Found 155 Videos of Their Daughter on Her Husband’s Laptop

Based on her report, the 36-year-old woman discovered 155 obscene videos of her daughter on her husband’s laptop. The videos indicated timestamps between July 2019 and Jul 8, 2020. The clips also consistently show footage of the victim recorded with the camera hidden below the sink.

The man claimed innocence, stating that the camera was for monitoring the victim studying in her room. However, during the investigation, the authorities did not discover single footage of the girl studying in any videos. He could be jailed for up to two years, fined or caned, depending on the counts of voyeurism.

Voyeurism Problem in Singapore

Women in Singapore are taking extra precautions to protect themselves and their private spaces. If they don’t they risk themselves getting filmed without their consent. The rising cases of voyeurism in Singapore could be the result of people being exposed to excessive amounts of pornography online.

The victims of voyeurism are not physically assaulted. However, this does not rule out the possibility of emotional and psychological harm. Victims could feel intimidated, ashamed, angry or powerless because of the unwanted exposure.

The Long-Term Psychological Effects of Voyeurism

Voyeurism can manifest in a variety of ways. Victims frequently experience social anxiety, melancholy, and nervousness, as well as vivid memories of the trauma, numbness, and denial.

“Sometimes a misconception here that non-physical abuse such as voyeurism is not as harmful or traumatic as physical abuse,” stated Ms Anisha Joseph, the head of the sexual assault care centre at the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE Singapore).

Meanwhile, the authorities took necessary actions to address the mentioned case.
