New Community Covid-19 Cases In Singapore: Three Students And A Toddler Infected

Three students and a toddler are reported to be among the new community cases.

With the rise of COVID cases in Singapore, more children are being affected by the virus. Three students from Greendale Secondary School, Peicai Secondary School and Yu Neng Primary School are reported to be among the new community cases. A toddler from Heart Field Kindergarten also tested positive for Covid-19.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced the new cases in a press release on Monday (24 May). Overall, there were 36 new Covid-19 cases reported that day.

1. Student at Greendale Secondary School

A 16-year-old boy at Greendale Secondary School tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday. MOH says the boy is a part-time worker for Pizza Hut at Punggol Plaza.

He was last in school on 17 May, and was then placed under quarantine on 23 May, after being in close contact with a positive Covid-19 case. His employer encouraged him to visit a GP clinic to test for infection on the same day. During this time, the boy was asymptomatic.

His results came back on 24 May, to confirm he was positive for Covid-19 infection. The teen’s serology test result is still pending.

2. Student at Peicai Secondary School

Another part-time worker from Pizza Hut at Punggol Plaza who is also a student at Peicai Secondary School tested positive for Covid-19. He is reported to be the case the boy from Greendale Secondary School was in close contact with, which is cause for concern.

The 15-year-old last attended school on 4 May. The boy developed a cough on 20 May, but he did not immediately seek medical treatment.

Then on 23 May, he underwent an ART and PCR test. Both test results came back positive and the boy also developed a fever on the same day. His serology test is still pending.

3. Student at Yu Neng Primary School

An 8-year-old student from Yu Neng Primary School also tested positive for Covid-19 on 23 May. The girl is a classmate of another case from the same school and so was placed under quarantine on 16 May.

On 18 May, she was tested for infection during her quarantine and her test result came back negative. Although, she developed a fever and sore throat on 23 May, and so reported her symptoms. She was tested again on the same day and the results came back positive this time around.

MOH adds that the girl’s serology test result is negative.

4. Student at Heart Field Kindergarten

A two-year-old boy from Heart Field Kindergarten who is also a Hong Kong citizen is among the new community cases reported. The toddler had last gone to school on 14 May.

MOH says the boy is a family member of one positive Covid-19 case and a household contact of two other infected cases. Due to this, he has been in quarantine since 14 May.

On 21 May, the boy developed a runny nose and tested positive in his ART on the same day. He also underwent a PCR test the next day where his test result came back positive for Covid-19. His serology test result is still pending.

With the recent COVID cases in multiple schools, students and parents are encouraged to continue practising good personal hygiene as well as adhere to safe management measures.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has urged all parents in a previous statement to comply with the screening policy of keeping children at home. It is also advised that parents inform schools if any household member develops symptoms of Covid-19.
