In Phoenix, Arizona, released 911 tapes of what appeared to be a baby surviving an abortion at a Phoenix family clinic surprised the entire state.
According to an NBC News, a staff from the clinic told the dispatcher that an aborted fetus had vital signs.
“There was a termination that was performed,” said the staff. “There is a fetus that is breathing right now, so we need someone to do services.”
The 911 dispatcher then asked whether or not the fetus was harmed, to which the staff replied in the negative. But the fetus did needed help that the clinic couldn’t provide.
“The fetus is breathing so we need care for it now,” the staff said. “We can’t provide that care except for oxygen and we’re trying to keep the fetus stable until someone arrives.”
According to federal law, clinics such as this one need to provide medical for all fetus surviving an abortion.
“Nobody did anything wrong,” said Kat Sabine, Executive Director of the Arizona chapter of NARAL Pro-Choice America, when she spoke with NBC News. “Absolutely nobody did anything wrong. The doctor, in fact, did everything right.”
Police reports said that the fetus was around 21 weeks old; the legal limit on the latest an abortion can be performed is at 24 weeks.
Police reports also said that the doctor checked several times if the fetus had a heartbeat, but didn’t find one.
But when they weighed the fetus on a scale, they found it moving.
The incident struck a chord with many pro-life advocates in the state, who then held a vigil and protested the incident.
Meanwhile, John Jakubczyk, a pro-life activist and lawyer, said that it’s the morality of the incident their group was calling attention to—not the legality of it.
“Maybe the child was born and lived for a moment. Maybe it lived for more than a few moments, I don’t know,” he said. “I wasn’t there. But I do know this, you had a human being that was born, a human being who died.”
Reports said that the fetus died minutes after being taken to the hospital.
