Singapore Declares 2021 As Year Of Celebrating SG Women

PM Lee said Singapore has made progress over the years at home, in workplaces and in society, but “still need to change mindsets further.

Minister for Social and Family Development (MSF) Masagos Zulkifli announced on Saturday (30 January) that this year will be dedicated as the Year of Celebrating SG Women.

In a Facebook post, Mr Masagos said: “We will focus our efforts this year to celebrate the progress and potential of Singapore women, and rally the community as part of this whole-of-society effort.”

It can be recalled that the Government announced last year that it will conduct a review of issues affecting women, such as gender equality and respect for women.

Mr Masagos said over 23 Conversations have been organised since the series launched in September last year, “with many more to come before the recommendations are made in a White Paper later this year.”

According to MSF, the logo for Celebrating SG Women is based on Singapore’s national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim, and represents the past, present and future, as well as the diversity of our SG Women across generations and all walks of life.

Other milestones that will mark the year-long celebrations include International Women’s Day, legislative reviews – including those involving the Women’s Charter.

“All of us play a part in cultivating a culture of respect and rapport which are fundamental to furthering the progress for our women, and our society.”

Also in a Facebook post, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said: “Beyond celebrating the contributions of women, past and present, in building Singapore, this movement also recognises the myriad roles women occupy in our community.”

“Whether prominent leaders or everyday workers – and everything in between, women are first and foremost our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters,” Mr Lee added.

PM Lee said Singapore has made progress over the years at home, in workplaces and in society, but “still need to change mindsets further.” He said ongoing Conversations on Singapore Women’s Development, which have drawn more than 1,000 participants, including working mothers, housewives, women leaders, men and young people, “seek to understand how to better support women and empower them to pursue their aspirations.”
