Britney Spears Drops A Bombshell About 'Abusive' Conservatorship, Blames Dad

6 min read

Pop princess Britney Spears took centerstage at an open court hearing in Los Angeles on June 23. Only this time she wasn’t performing but pouring her heart out against her 13-year long conservatorship.

The 39-year-old mum-of-two has been under a legally binding conservatorship since 2008. As a result, she has had no control over her deals and finances; and as it turns out even her productive rights.

Britney Spears Conservatorship: What She Revealed During the Hearing

During the hearing, Spears told Judge Brenda Penny that she was ‘traumatised’ and ‘depressed’ as a result of her conservatorship.  I’m not here to be anyone’s slave. I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m okay and I’m happy. It’s a lie. I thought that maybe if I said it enough, I would maybe become happy because I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised … I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed,” she stated.

She also asserted to the judge that she wanted her life back, adding, “I just want my life back, it’s been 13 years and it’s enough […]. The main reason why I’m here is because I want to end the conservatorship without being evaluated.”

She categorically stated that her conservators were not allowing her to marry her boyfriend Sam Asghari, or even have children. “I want to be able to get married and have a baby. “I’m not able to get married or have a baby. I have an IUD inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant,” she told the judges.

Here are some more bombshells she dropped during the court hearing.

Spears Blames Family For The Conservatorship Debacle

During the hearing, Britney blamed her father, Jamie Spears, and the rest of her family for their alleged “abusive” treatment (under the arrangement).

For the unaware, Britney Spears’ conservatorship began when she underwent a mental health crisis in 2008. At the time, members of the paparazzi captured her behaving erratically publicly.

As a result, she was legally considered to have a severely reduced mental capacity and the court assigned her a conservator who would make both the financial and the other major decisions for her. Since the conservator can be a family member, a close friend or a court-appointed professional. In Spears’ case, it was assigned to her father along with a lawyer, Andrew Wallet. The latter resigned in March 2019.
Her father was recently reduced to a co-conservator of her estate along with a financial trust. During the hearing on Wednesday, Britney compared her father to a “sex-trafficker.” She said, “He loved the control he had over me.”

Forced to take lithium drugs

The singer claimed that she was forced to take lithium drugs, which impaired her ability to think clearly. She said, “It’s a strong drug. You can go mentally impaired if you stay on it longer than 5 months… I felt drunk, I couldn’t even have a conversation with my mom or dad about anything. They had me with six different nurses.”

She Finds Conservatorship “Demoralising”

The pop star told the judges that she found it very “demoralising” when people questioned her about her mental state.
She shared that it is happening in spite of her successfully going back to work and teaching her dancers their choreography – all by herself.  She also added that the restrictions under conservatorship had gone “too far.”

From not being able to meet her friends that she made during the three years of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, to not being allowed to have a child, her freedom was curbed from all sides. She pleaded with the judges to give her ‘life back.’

She further added that the conservatorship is doing her more harm than good.

As she added, “I feel ganged up on, and I feel bullied, and I feel left out and alone. I’m tired of feeling alone. I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does by having a child, a family — any of those things.”

Taking to Instagram, Spears penned a long note for her fans. She even apologised for ‘pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years.’

Her post comes hours after her plea in a US court to end her longstanding conservatorship.

Sharing a picture of a fairy tale, she wrote, “I just want to tell you guys a little secret … I believe as people we all want the fairy tale life and by the way, I’ve posted … my life seems to look and be pretty amazing … I think that’s what we all strive for !!!! That was one of my mother’s best traits … no matter how sh**ty a day was when I was younger … for the sake of me and my siblings she always pretended like everything was ok.”

“I’m bringing this to peoples attention because I don’t want people to think my life is perfect because IT’S DEFINITELY NOT AT ALL … and if you have read anything about me in the news this week … you obviously really know now it’s not !!!! I apologize for pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years … I did it because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me … but honestly who doesn’t want to capture there Instagram in a fun light !!!!,” she added.

Pop Princess’ Fans Show Her Love After The Explosive Hearing

From asking her to stay strong and to agreeing that she deserves a life, her fans took to the comments section below her post to show love for the singer.

One follower wrote, “You are a brave legend, more iconic than any fairy tale character could ever be! Go on, Queen!!! We’re behind you all the way!”

Spears’ conservatorship came under severe fire and scrutiny after the release of The New York Times‘ documentary Framing Britney Spears. It gave way to a global #FreeBritney movement, whose supporters demanded that she be removed from her conservatorship now.
