During the hearing, Britney blamed her father, Jamie Spears, and the rest of her family for their alleged “abusive” treatment (under the arrangement).
For the unaware, Britney Spears’ conservatorship began when she underwent a mental health crisis in 2008. At the time, members of the paparazzi captured her behaving erratically publicly.
As a result, she was legally considered to have a severely reduced mental capacity and the court assigned her a conservator who would make both the financial and the other major decisions for her. Since the conservator can be a family member, a close friend or a court-appointed professional. In Spears’ case, it was assigned to her father along with a lawyer, Andrew Wallet. The latter resigned in March 2019.
Her father was recently reduced to a co-conservator of her estate along with a financial trust. During the hearing on Wednesday, Britney compared her father to a “sex-trafficker.” She said, “He loved the control he had over me.”
Forced to take lithium drugs
The singer claimed that she was forced to take lithium drugs, which impaired her ability to think clearly. She
said, “It’s a strong drug. You can go mentally impaired if you stay on it longer than 5 months… I felt drunk, I couldn’t even have a conversation with my mom or dad about anything. They had me with six different nurses.”
She Finds Conservatorship “Demoralising”
The pop star told the judges that she found it very “demoralising” when people questioned her about her mental state.
She shared that it is happening in spite of her successfully going back to work and teaching her dancers their choreography – all by herself. She also added that the restrictions under conservatorship had gone “too far.”
From not being able to meet her friends that she made during the three years of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, to not being allowed to have a child, her freedom was curbed from all sides. She pleaded with the judges to give her ‘life back.’
She further added that the conservatorship is doing her more harm than good.
As she added, “I feel ganged up on, and I feel bullied, and I feel left out and alone. I’m tired of feeling alone. I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does by having a child, a family — any of those things.”
