12 Feb, 2013
Energy boosting foods

Energy boosting foods

New mummies need all the strength and energy that they can get in order to keep up with a demanding and delicate newborn. Aside from 8 hours of sleep, they should also eat the 10 best foods for new mums.
Eggs

Eggs

Eggs make perfect food for new mums because they are easy to cook and are very nutritious. Packed with protein, iron and Vitamin B, eggs help one feel full longer so mummies will be able to play and take care of their baby continuously.
Water and milk

Water and milk

Dehydration is the main cause of decreased energy so drink lots of water. Make sure that 8 glasses of water a day are consumed. Aside from water, drink at least two to three glasses of milk every single day. Milk gives lots of calcium and keeps stamina of mums strong all day long.
Whole grains

Whole grains

Some mummies are afraid of eating grains like oats, brown rice and barley because of the carbs. But carbohydrates in whole grains are not your enemy. They are, in fact, very important in ensuring that energy levels are maintained the entire day. Just make sure that only whole wheat and whole grain bread, rice and pastas are consumed.
Spinach

Spinach

Green, leafy and oh-so-good-for-you, spinach is a low-calorie food that would make new mummies feel energetic all day long. Spinach is very versatile and can be added in various salads, pizzas, wraps, omelettes and more.
Steel cut oats

Steel cut oats

Carbohydrates are essential for new moms. Steel-cut oats increase stamina and boost energy levels for hours. The fiber content these oats offer are great for digestion and stability of sugar levels too. Steel cut oats also promote brain clarity and mental focus.
Almonds

Almonds

The best snacks for new mummies, almonds do not only elevate energy levels but metabolisms as well. Almonds and other kinds of nuts are great sources of selenium too. Selenium is a power antioxidant that helps promote good moods and increased cognitive function. Since these nuts are small and could easily be packed, they could be taken anywhere inside the handbag or in the car.
Legumes

Legumes

Lentils and other legumes are great sources of energy so eat up on red, white, black and other types of beans. High in fiber and iron, one cup of beans make tired mums feel energized instantly. This is because the iron in beans increases the much-needed red blood cells and the oxygen in the body.
Oranges

Oranges

Readily available, oranges are great sources of energy, fiber and Vitamin C. The natural sugar this citrus fruit gives is enough to make any new mom buzz around like a bee the entire day. Don’t fully substitute fresh fruit with fruit juice since the full benefits won’t be obtained.
Apples

Apples

Rich in fiber, apples help new moms gear up for a busy day. Sweet and crunchy, apples help slow down carbohydrates absorption and help keep the feeling of fullness longer.
Bananas

Bananas

Hassle-free food, bananas are filled with carbohydrates, potassium and Vitamin B. New mums with fussy babies who want to be constantly picked up and cuddled could greatly benefit from bananas. This is because this particular fruit prevents muscles from getting overworked and stiff. Bananas also keep blood sugar level stable.
