Summary:
In the second book of the “Asian Values” series, we are introduced to Baby Panda, who does not know how to show respect to his elders or his surroundings. One day, in a disobedient and sulky mood, he takes off and then gets lost in the forest.
In this journey, however, he begins to appreciate what he has and understand the importance of respect. Baby Panda makes a decision to turn over a new leaf and seeks help from Tiger, and is reunited with his Mother but has finally learnt his lesson.
What we liked best:
1) The delightful illustrations by Li Dan depict Baby Panda’s journey wonderfully and are able to keep children captivated throughout.
2) The simple layout and words help young children to follow the story easily.
3) How the poetical title means ‘finding the way’ both literally and figuratively (in the sense of finding yourself and your cultural values).
What we disliked:
1) Although it was good that there were not too many points to take note of, the book could have touched on at least one other value as well, such as humility, which seems to be a big part of Baby Panda’s journey as well.
Our Verdict: Overall, this book is a rather fun and effective way to teach your little ones about our essential ‘Asian Values’. We give it 3.5 stars out of 5!
