Baby born without blood lives

8 Feb, 2012
Baby born without blood lives

Some babies are born with silver spoons and others are born to beat all odds. Here’s one that came into the world without the most vital bodily fluid—blood, yet he lives…

Baby born without blood Miracle baby Oliver Morgan suffering from Vasa Previa

A rare condition

Baby Oliver Morgan came back from the dead with help from doctors. His was a condition where every single drop of blood was drained from his tiny body while he was still in his mother’s womb.

He came into the world looking lifeless, pale and practically like a stillborn. Doctors could not find a heartbeat for a whopping 25 minutes! His was a condition called Vasa Previa, an obstetric complication in which an extra vein is formed in the mother’s womb—the vein ruptured. Mother, Katy, was drenched in blood about 37 ½ weeks into her pregnancy.

Traumatic c-section

When Katy was bleeding so profusely, she was rushed to Maidstone General Hospital—not knowing that all that blood came from the baby, basically her baby was drained of it’s life fluids.

Baby Oliver was came about via C-section and weighed in at 6 pounds and 1 ounce. He was resuscitated and given an emergency blood transfusion to replenish the loss of all his blood. The blood was pumped into the attached umbilical cord that was not yet snipped.

Katy, 36, shared her story: "Oliver's birth was so traumatic that I haven't been able to bring myself to tell his story till now. He was born a dead baby without blood in his body - but now he's sitting here smiling at me.

She added: "The doctors literally brought him back to life and I will never be able to thank them enough for this wonderful gift."

Now a healthy toddler

Oliver survived the ordeal and is now a healthy 15-month-old toddler. He joins his 7-year-old brother, mum Katy and dad Jeff. Miracle baby Oliver’s nightmare had him taken into a special baby care unit. Besides being given oxygen and a gentle heart massage, his temperature was lowered to 33°C in order to avoid permanent injury when they pumped blood into his body. Doctors also forced blood flow away from his skin—instead, to his heart and brain.

His body temperature was raised only after three days—back to the normal 37°C – gradually by ½ a degree a day. Miraculously, after 11 days miracle baby Oliver was all right to return home with his family.

Knowing that there could have been a million-and-one possible complications— they could have been born without a brain or without limbs. We are eternally grateful for our healthy babies. Oliver's story with Vasa Previa helps us believe in miracles--they are everywhere, if you just took some time to look a little closer.
