6 Top Ways to Prevent Diaper Rash

Diaper rashes can look scary but there are simple, effective ways to prevent them and reduce their severity, so your little one can be comfy and fuss-free…

“As smooth as a baby’s bottom”, they say, to describe something that’s amazingly smooth and soft, with no imperfections. There’s nothing quite as soft and delicate as a baby’s skin.

And as a parent, you want to do everything that you can to nourish your baby’s skin, so it stays smooth and healthy.

So it’s quite natural to freak out when you discover tiny red bumps on your little one’s bottom.

Yes, diaper rash looks scary, and it can be quite frustrating to see your little angel all cranky and miserable from it. But know that you are not alone. Most parents have to deal with diaper rash at some point, especially in the first year of their child’s life.

Thankfully, with some simple changes in diapering, you can greatly reduce the risk of diaper rash for your baby.

6 Top Ways to Prevent Diaper Rash

Preventing Diaper Rash in Babies

Before we move on to the tips, do note that, if your little one does get a diaper rash and it doesn’t go away, gets worse, and itches or oozes, please get in touch with your doctor. Also, get medical attention if your baby seems to be in pain, comes down with a fever, and seems fussier than usual.

Here are some simple tips to follow to keep away those dreaded rashes:

  • Change diapers often

The #1 care tip is to change wet or dirty diapers as soon as possible. This reduces moisture on the skin which can trigger a rash. A child left in a wet or soiled diaper for too long is more likely to develop diaper rash.

Also, remember to change diapers as soon as your little one wakes up from sleeping.

  • Keep the area clean and dry

When cleaning the diaper area, make sure you avoid scented baby wipes and products containing perfume or alcohol. These can irritate your little one’s skin.

Use water and a soft washcloth or cotton balls instead of soap. If you prefer baby wipes, choose products that are alcohol and fragrance-free. Gently pat your baby’s skin dry with a soft cloth before you put on another diaper. Be careful not to rub, as this may irritate your child’s skin. Avoid talcum powder.

Another important point to note is to always wash your hands before and after a diaper change. This prevents the spreading of germs that can cause infections and lead to diaper rash.

  • Give some air time

Whenever possible, let your baby go without a diaper – aim for at least 10 minutes of air time. Exposure to air can help soothe and dry out the skin.

Pro tip: Place a towel or waterproof pad before you let your little one go bare bottom, to avoid messy accidents!

  • Keep it loose

Remember to check the size and make sure that your baby’s diapers are growing with him or her. Also, while it is important to fasten diapers securely to prevent leaks, don’t make them so tight that they chafe your baby’s delicate skin.

  • Use barrier cream

If you notice that your little one has sensitive skin, try applying a diaper rash cream or ointment during each diaper change. This acts as a barrier and prevents moisture and irritants from coming into contact with your baby’s skin.

Changing diaper brands or types help with diaper rash in babies

  • Change diaper brands or types.

Every baby’s skin is different. And sometimes, even though you have been super vigilant with the diaper changes and rash cream, your little one still gets a rash.

You might want to switch to other diaper brands designed for sensitive skin.

A baby’s skin is super delicate and still developing. It is more prone to irritation when exposed to products containing fragrance and chemical additives.

So it’s a huge relief to have options such as Skinature by Drypers, which is chlorine-free, fragrance-free and free from allergens. They have also gone one step ahead and made sure that not just the top sheet, but the whole diaper is safe and gentle for a baby’s sensitive skin, making it the best option for any baby skin type.
