17-month-old Severely Burned From Water Heater Explosion While Parents Were Bathing Him

A 17-month-old toddler suffered from severe burns after the water heater exploded while his parents were bathing him.

The family who hails from the Liaoning capital of Shenyang, China, had been in their apartment bathroom when the incident occurred on 13 June 2020. 

According to reports, the family of three were badly burned in the water heater explosion.

Doctor Wang Li Jun from the Shenyang Fire Fighting Shaoshang Special Hospital said that the toddler had 95 per cent of his body badly burned.

He also experienced inhalation injury and hypovolemic shock. All three family members underwent emergency treatment immediately.

While all of them have reportedly passed the crucial stage and their condition have stabilised, it is uncertain when they will recover fully due to the extent of their injuries. 

In a video uploaded on Pear Video, images from the bathroom depicts a disaster zone with the sink ripped from the wall.

The family’s neighbour said in an interview that she was sitting at the stairway during the time of the incident when she heard a loud thud coming from the house.

According to her, there were hot air coming through the toilet and kitchen window. She immediately called for an ambulance.

It was said that the toddler’s mum tried to endure the pain and hugged her child tightly while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, refusing to let go of him.

Family members of the injured got in touch with the company who manufactured the water heater, hoping to investigate the cause of the water heater explosion.

To compensate the family, the company sent over 50,000 yuan (S$9,800) on the afternoon of 16 June 2020.

However, given the large sum of compensation involved, the family was urged to pursue the matter in court instead.
