MOH said that child’s passing marks the first COVID-19 death for patients below 12 years old in Singapore.

The little boy who recently died from the infectious disease had no other medical history; he was previously well. Until the night of June 21st, he had a high fever and recurrent seizures. At that time, the child was subsequently beginning to lose consciousness.

The family then decided to take him to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). They immediately brought the child to the Children’s Emergency Department of the hospital that night.

On the 22nd of June, the 1-year-old boy was then admitted to the Children’s Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. According to the doctor’s diagnosis, the child has severe meningoencephalitis.

The little boy’s polymerase chain reaction test happened to be positive for COVID-19. Aside from that, he was also diagnosed with rhinovirus/enterovirus and the respiratory syncytial virus.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health extends its deepest condolences to the patient’s family. The KKH, on the other hand, is in contact with the family to support them.

Singapore’s MOH releases a statement saying that COVID-19 can result in severe disease. The condition can become serious even in children and those without pre-existing medical conditions.

According to the Ministry of Health, “Vaccination substantially reduces the likelihood of severe disease when one is infected.”

MOH also recommends that all children ages 5 to 11 get the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine. It is beneficial to children, especially those with underlying chronic medical conditions.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health collaborates with the Sciences Authority and the Expert Committee on COVID-19 Vaccination. They will be conducting a study about the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines for children under 5.
