Studies have shown that kids who get adequate exercise have a lower risk of childhood obesity, have improved concentration, and are more likely to be healthy adults.
With this in mind, what better way to ensure the health of your whole family than to exercise together? Sign up for the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) 2015 for a simple and totally fun way of getting the whole family fit!
The SCMS—which will be held this year over the weekend of 5-6 December—is the marquee running event on Singapore’s sporting calendar. In previous years, Singaporean children have enjoyed participating in the Kids Dash, which has always been a part of the SCMS.
A running fiesta for the whole family!
This year things will be different—but in a good way! SCMS 2015 will see one of the most significant changes in the event’s history, where the Kids Dash will be held as a standalone event on Saturday, 5 December. It will be held at the iconic Sports Hub, which will also host the ASEAN Para Games (APG) in December.
SCMS 2015 aims to deliver a weekend-long running fiesta which encourages greater participation among junior runners on Saturday, while preserving the Marathon’s status as a world-class multidistance race on Sunday.
Kids Dash 2015: What you need to know
Saturday 5 December is going to be a perfect day out for families because it’s when the Kids Dash will be held. This is a 700m fun run designed especially for sporty youngsters aged 13 and below.
There will also be a carnival area, performances on stage for kids, fringe activities, and a good variety of delicious food and drink items to keep your little runner’s energy levels up.
Registration starts at $20 per child for early bird prices (regular price is $25) and one guardian is allowed per child. For participants aged 6 and below, it is compulsory for a parent or guardian to accompany the child during the race for safety purposes.
The remaining adult categories – Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km run, and Ekiden – will continue to take place on Sunday 6 December, allowing running parents to accompany their children for the Kids Dash at Sports Hub on 5 December and focus on their own adults run on 6 December.
Live better through sports
Chris Robb, Chief Executive Officer of Spectrum Worldwide, the event organiser behind the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore, says:
The Kids Dash is an integral part of the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore as it provides an opportunity for the young runners to also be part of the event. The 7oom distance is also a fun distance for the kids, suitable for the youngest of runners up to the older children who will graduate up to the Ekiden or 10km in years to come.
According to Robb, this year’s Kids Dash has been capped at 5,000 participants to ensure the participants’ safety.
The kids will also be placed in specific start waves, allowing them to safely run alongside children of their own age, Robb elaborates. All participants will receive a finisher’s medal to recognise their outstanding achievement.
