We still needed to stay alert against the virus while trying to live the way we did before the pandemic. Unfortunately, this proved to be difficult for many of us who stayed in the safety of our homes.
In truth, a lot of employed individuals preferred to prioritise themselves instead of returning to work in the office. This triggered ‘The Great Resignation’ that affected both large and small businesses. A lot of employed parents left their jobs to find remote work that helps them spend more time with family.
If you say yes to quitting your job, you can finally prioritise yourself and do whatever you want. You can live like the people who caused ‘The Great Resignation’ and find remote work. However, despite the tempting view of freedom, an author with experience working in different businesses would advise you to do otherwise.
Aliza Knox worked as a global finance and consulting executive for decades. She now works as a speaker and a non-executive director. Throughout her career, she received the title of 2020 APAC IT Woman of The Year. She wrote a book titled Don’t Quit Your Day Job: The 6 Mindshifts You Need to Rise and Thrive at Work.
Concerning this, she is passionate about helping the company, and its people grow; that is how she was known. People tend to seek her career advice. She recently sat down with theAsianparent to talk about her book.
Author Highlights Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Quit Your Job
While describing her book, Ms Knox says she does not solely rely on her personal experience. Hence, the book was inspired by many people of all ages across the world. It is her way of giving back to people and the community—by creating a book that can benefit many.
Quitting a Job
“People need to think about when they leave [and] why they leave,” said author Aliza Knox.
For some people, leaving their job is their way of making themselves feel powerful in the short run. Meanwhile, some people think that keeping working does not actually help you over the long term. In turn, Ms Knox relates romantic relationships to an employee’s relationship with the company.
“You can’t expect every need of yours to be fulfilled by a husband, wife, partners, girlfriend, whatever,” she said.
However, there will be some point in someone’s career when they expect almost everything from their career. People want their job to be fun and fulfilling. At the same time, they want it to have the total capacity to meet their needs. Keep in mind that work could be just like your relationship with another human being.
“You can’t put all your expectations on them,” she said.
Work and Passion
It could be possible for other people to do their work and passion all at the same time. However, it does not apply to everyone; it always depends on the situation. You might want to ask yourself about your passion:
“Does work give me the flexibility and time? Does it leave me with the energy and provide me with the finances to pursue those passions?”
Indeed, it is a bright idea to merge your passion and work; it could be an ideal job for almost everyone. It is satisfying to think that you are doing something you are passionate about and earning simultaneously.
It is truly a perfect job for anybody! You are hitting two birds with one stone. However, that is not always the case. It does work for everyone, and that is entirely okay.
Keep in mind that your passion and professional capability could also be different. There are ways you can do to manage both of them; it is just a matter of time and commitment.
“I Like It Here”
Several people stay in just one company or industry for a very long time. They do not want to leave the environment they are in for a long period because they enjoy what they are doing. When asked, people like them will simply say, “I like it here.”
“People need to do what makes them feel good [about themselves],” said Ms Knox.
The work environment is a good factor as well. Most people stay in a company because they feel comfortable and valued.
It is hard to stay in a company where you cannot see your worth. In contrast, it is definitely difficult to leave a workplace where people make sure you feel valued and appreciated.
Finding a company that will work for you and help you develop and improve yourself would be best. It is essential to look for a place where your hard work can be rewarded and fulfilled.
Decision-Making Paralysis
People tend to experience decision-making paralysis. It is a situation where you are unable to make a decision because you are overthinking a problem.
“Do not agonise over your choice,” said Ms Knox. “I think endless question analysis gives every choice too much power.”
Keep in mind that there is a rare wrong choice that could limit your choice forever. It is essential to recognise it, if possible, earlier. It can make it easier for you to make decisions at the beginning of your career.
“A job at any good firm will teach you something,” said Ms Knox.
You do not always have to be always quit your job in just a year or less than a year because you are learning. You cannot learn everything in under two years for most jobs.
“Commitment builds energy for you, which will help you do your job well and succeed; it creates forward momentum.”
