Despite their sweet and sour goodness, there are many reasons that make candies a health hazard. But who would’ve thought they were capable of literally drilling a hole in a child’s tongue!
Well, that’s exactly what happened to a four-year-old girl, who allegedly got her tongue burnt by a pack of sour Warheads candies. Leaving her mum horrified!

While her mother was upstairs working, 4-year-old, Willow Wright, decided to raid a cupboard filled with her older brother’s Warheads hard candies.
The child reportedly devoured 10 pieces of the “extremely sour” candy. Shortly after, she started to feel a severe burning sensation in her mouth that made her come running to her mother.
After seeing the visible burn on her tongue, Willow was immediately rushed to see a doctor. But once inspected, the doctors told the family there was not much they could do for her and that the wound would heal on its own in a few days.
“It felt like the skin was coming off,” little Willow said, as per Australia’s 9 News.
Her mother, Kirsty Wright, also told the news channel, “I burst into tears because I was really worried; I had never seen this before.”

Since the horrifying Warheads candy fiasco, Kirsty has used her daughter’s tongue injury to warn other fellow parents of the dangers of the sour treat.
“I just wanted to make it aware to parents how dangerous these lollies actually are,” said the mother of the 4-year-old. Following the incident, Kirsty also reportedly threw out every Warheads candy in their home.
The company that makes the candy, Impact Confections, has not responded to request for comments on the incident. But according to their website, the manufacturer maintains that their sour ingredients “are included at levels at or below regulatory limits.”
These limits were stipulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“We produce only high-quality products that meet all US Federal guidelines for PH levels and ingredients, and when eaten normally, consumers enjoy them with no issues. However, some people may have an increased sensitivity to these ingredients,” the company said in their statement.
They added, “To ensure a fun and enjoyable eating experience, a voluntary statement is printed on every package warning that the candy is extremely sour and can be an irritation to sensitive mouths and tongues.”
The Warheads packaging also states that children under 4 years of age should not be eating the candy.
Dentists have also since warned that sour sweets such as the Warheads candies can be hazardous for children. This is due to their high acid content and Warheads contain four kinds including ascorbic, citric, lactic and malic.
