The country which you are born in will have a large impact on your life and the Economist Intelligence Unit would recommend that you should deliver your baby in Switzerland. According to an article published on the Business Insider website, the Economist Intelligence Unit recently compiled a list of the best countries to be born in based on 11 factors. The rankings were based on which country would provide the best environment for your baby to grow up safe and healthy and enjoy a prosperous quality of life.
How did they come up with the list?
The list was created based on 11 different indicators. The indicators were material wellbeing, life expectancy, gender equality, weather conditions, quality of family life, safety, community life and governance. Based on these indicators, Switzerland came up at the top of the pile. The list contains 80 countries in total with Nigeria being ranked the least desirable country to deliver a baby in. So which is the best country to live in?

- Australia
- Norway
- Sweden
- Denmark
- Singapore
- New Zealand
- Netherlands
- Canada
- Hong Kong
How accurate is this list?
As one can see from the results, Singapore did very well since it managed to gain a high rank of 6th place. Judging from the list, Singapore is the best Asian country to live in and its closest competitor is Hong Kong which was ranked 10th place. It is interesting and kind of ironic as well that when we conducted a poll on our Facebook page asking our readers whether they would migrate to another country if they had the chance to, an overwhelming majority of them said yes. The country which was the most popular choice among our readers to migrate to was easily Australia. Australia managed to gain an impressive second place ranking in the list compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Is this a case of the grass always being greener on the other side? When you examine the indicators which the Economist Intelligence Unit used to compile its list, it is no surprise that Singapore managed to get a good ranking. Singapore has always been renowned for being a safe country with a low crime rate, quality health services and little corruption. However, judging from the recent Punggol East by-election and the whole brouhaha surrounding the White Paper, it is evident that Singaporeans are not very happy with their quality of life. Sky rocketing COE and property prices coupled with an inadequate transport system and a large population of foreigners are some of the main gripes of Singaporeans.
Are Singaporeans just unappreciative of all the perks we have in our country or is this list simply inaccurate? We shall leave the judging up to you.
