Emojis, the newest universal language, is becoming gender-inclusive and open to various cultures. The last two decades have seen the rise of this new type of global language. Yet, there were stereotypical issues which are slowly changing now. Curious to know what are all the new emojis of 2020? Read on.
Unicode Consortium has approved the chart for Emoji 13.0 for 2020, to be released by various platforms soon. This inclusivity changing the gender-specific roles in the society will help parents develop gender acceptability among children. Imagine kids growing up seeing emoji of a man bottle-feeding a baby or a woman wearing a tuxedo or a very gender-neutral Santa.
When the whole world shows awareness about diversity, it is no surprise that emojis will do so too. When Japanese artist Shigetaka Kurita designed the first emojis, he had no idea that it will turn into a big industry one day. What started as a few characters to depict weather, traffic, technology and phases of the moon, has grown into a complete visual dialect.
Now, the emoji Pictionary is on the way towards being politically correct too. These have added on to the 2019 collection numbered Emoji 12.1. Wondering what are all the new emojis and their specialities? Look at the inclusions this year.
1. Woman in a tuxedo, Person in tuxedo: Along with a man in a tuxedo, a woman in a tuxedo has been added as diversity. Also, a gender-neutral ‘person in tuxedo’ has been included.
2. Man in a veil, Person in a veil: As against a woman in a veil, a more inclusive ‘person in the veil’ has been introduced as well as a ‘man in the veil’.
3. Feeding a baby: This was an act which was not in circulation. So, a woman, a man and a person – feeding baby have been included.
4. Mx.Claus: Santa and his better half, Mrs Claus, are now in company with this gender-neutral Mx. Claus.
5. Transgender symbol and Transgender flag: A very promising move towards inclusivity has been this symbol and flag. This acceptance was much awaited.
6. Ninja (with skin tones): Another interesting addition showing diversity is a ninja with different skin tones.
7. Disguised face: To make your conversations more exciting, you have this very overdone face showing disguise.
8. Smiling face with tears: Want to convey empathy, understanding or other softer emotions? Here you have the smiley with tears intact.
9. Pinched fingers: Depicting the original ‘Italian hand gesture’, this is not to be confused with the ‘chef’s kiss’. This ‘capeesh’ gesture has a universality of its own.
10. Anatomical heart and lungs: This give you the chance to talk about the organ heart
rather than the emotional heart.
11. People hugging: The 3D kind of image of two people hugging is again an attempt to achieve universal acceptance. The gender neutrality of the image is deliberate.
12. Potted plant and Edibles: Other than an image of a potted plant, vegetables and fruits like bell peppers, blueberries and olives have a depiction now.
13. Food items: More diversity is visible in including tamale, flatbread, fondue, bubble tea and a teapot.
14. Animals: 3D images of animals getting acceptance are a black cat, bison, polar bear, beaver, seal, dodo and mammoth. The insects are worm, beetle, cockroach and a fly.
15. Random articles: Some things that did not have representation before, have one now. There are emojis for feather, threaded needle, log of wood, rock, roller skate, hut, pick-up truck, nesting doll, magic wand, a pinata, knot, long drum, thong sandal, helmet, accordion, coin, boomerang, screwdriver, hook, carpentry saw, ladder, mirror, window, elevator, plunger, toothbrush, bucket, mousetrap, headstone and a placard.
Other than the disguised face and the ‘smile with tears’, all the human representations have skin tones on offer. You can go ahead and have a diverse chat.
