'An unsung heroine in Singapore's history': Mrs Wee Kim Wee, late President's wife, dies at 102

“Mrs Wee Kim Wee was an unsung heroine in Singapore’s history. As the wife of one of our most well-loved Presidents, she served the people with grace.”

Rich tributes poured in, as Madam Koh Sok Hiong, wife of late Singapore President Wee Kim Wee, died on 7 July 2018. She was 102.

Singapore President Madam Halimah Yacob wrote on Facebook:

“She was a steadfast advocate of education and providing opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth. Active in supporting charitable causes in these areas during Dr Wee’s presidency, Mrs Wee continued to do so in later years.

“But perhaps most of all, Singaporeans will remember Mrs Wee for her selfless dedication to the late Dr Wee. Throughout their 69 years of marriage, Mrs Wee always stood by and supported Dr Wee. Their love story will remain an inspiration to many.”

She leaves behind six daughters, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mrs.Wee Kim Wee was known to be a kind-hearted woman who even offered drinks to rag and bone men who came knocking.

She was well-known for her charitable causes, long after her tenure as First Lady.

She was also an excellent cook. In 2011, Mrs Wee wrote, photographed and published a book of more than 200 of her mother’s recipes. The book is called, Cooking for the President – Reflections & Recipes of Mrs Wee Kim Wee, and documents Peranakan cooking, 

Her love and selfless dedication to her husband was known to all. And she played an important role in his rise from journalist to politician.

Mrs Wee’s daughter, Maureen Wee Bee Neo, revealed in an interview that her mother not only cooked for them, but also gave them haircuts and tailored their clothes.

Dr Wee Kim Wee once said that she “put in almost 14 to 16 hours daily, seven days a week, 365 days a year” taking care of the family.

May her soul rest in peace.
