I remember the first time someone gave my child a weapon. Okay, it was a toy weapon. My son was in his Avengers phase and somebody gave him a Thor hammer for his birthday. I seriously thought about discarding the gift or letting my son play with it.

In the end, I gave in and allowed him to keep it. But it came with a warning that I would confiscate the toy the moment he uses it to hurt his sisters and other people.

More pretend weapons came after - a shield, a sword and not long enough, my son asked me to buy him his first toy gun at the toy store. As I was paying at the counter, I contemplated whether it was okay or if I was making a major parenting mistake.
