Toddler hit by a van

A 2-year-old girl from southern China was run over twice and no passer-by came to the rescue. In fact, more than a dozen people walked, cycled and drove past the girl as she lay almost lifeless and bleeding on the street– critically injured.

How can society be so desensitised and selfish? This happened in the southern China city of Foshan, but will things be different if it took place in another country?

Run over twice

Disturbing footage taken from a surveillance camera show that people walked, drove and cycled right past the toddler, named Yue Yue, minding their own business. After being hit by a van, Yue Yue was then run over by a truck outside her family’s shop, yet 18 people walked right by, not offering to help.

Finally, after a lapse of 10 crucial minutes, a rubbish scavenger moved the little girl to the curb. The mother then picked the child off the road and brought her to the hospital.

Some of the heartless people that walked past the little limp body actually paused to look—only to walk away without getting involved. Three people left Yue Yue on the street after she got run over the first time. If she had been lifted off the road, then the truck would not have run her over too.

Police have detained both drivers for the hit and run incident.

A sick society

Yue Yue’s father, Wang Chichang : “I feel helpless and angry. Had one passer-by stopped to help earlier, this whole thing wouldn’t have been so tragic.” Wang added: “If our society continues to be like this, my child’s case won’t be the last one.”

Chen Xianmei, the good Samaritan who helped Yue Yue off the street said: “Blood was coming out her nose and mouth. I didn’t understand why no one else had carried her from the street…I didn’t think of anything at the time, I just wanted to save the girl.”

Death by diffusion of responsibility

As reported by Shanghai Daily, the toddler did not survive the injuries after the double collission on Thursday. However, there are other state media reports that says she is in a deep coma. China Daily reported that medics had declared the girl braindead on Sunday and would remain in a vegetative state, depending on life support.

UPDATE: A spokesman from the hospital treating the girl told AFP: “Yue Yue died of systemic organ failure.” May this little one rest in peace.
