Things Indian mums say
#1 How thin you’ve become! You’re not eating properly.
If there’s one thing an Indian mother is perpetually worried about, it’s if her child has been fed enough. Even if you weigh a ton on the scale, your maa will always add an extra tablespoon of ghee to your food and exclaim that her dear child looks too weak for comfort. And this is one of the most repetitive things Indian mums say everyday no matter what.
#2 You’re sick? It’s all because of the buri nazar of people.
Clearly, the universal cause for sickness for an Indian mum is the doing of buri nazar. Her child is the best thing in the universe and everyone’s ‘bad eye’ is what’s caused him/her to be ill.
#3 Who’s that you’ve been talking to on the phone?
Be a little hush-hush on the phone and the Indian mum’s antenna starts working overtime. She will eye you suspiciously and look for any signs of body language that give away the fact that you’re upto mischief.
#4 I told you keep that vrat/do that pooja/don’t wash your hair on Friday.
Break those rules and you’ve committed a cardinal sin. She will either label you as good-for-nothing or burn you down with her icy stare.
#5 You will know only when you become a mother.
This one’s a classic of all the things Indian mums say. It is also an answer to all your whys. This statement is often accompanied by wide eyes and the shaking of her finger for emphasis.
#6 What is all this on TV nowadays? During our times, cinema was so beautiful and meaningful.
According to a mum, any kind of music, movies or soaps shown nowadays have no depth. She will make it a point to tell you how clean, meaningful and beautiful the actors, movies or television of her time were.
#7 Are you even thinking of getting married? That neighbourwali aunty’s daughter your age has two kids already.
After food, marriage is what concerns the Indian maa the most. Once you step into your 20s, she will try all the tricks to get you into the marriage mode, whether you like it or not.
8 You’re still out? When are you thinking of getting back home?
This statement is often followed by whether you care about the house. She will expect you to drop everything and rush back home. Even if you live away from her, her special alarm clock will ring if she feels you are out after 7:30pm.
#9 I’m your mom, I know everything.
You can’t run or hide away from this one. She knows exactly when you’re sad or angry. And if you argue or try to change the topic, she will stare at you with the power of the Indian maa and then wrap you in a bear hug later.
Whatever she says, there’s no doubt about that we love the way she takes care and looks out for us. God bless you, maa.
