Research by CASH, a group of specialists concerned with salt and its effects on health, has shown that reducing children’s salt intake by half leads to immediate falls in their blood pressure. How’s that for the salty truth?

The immediate benefits of such reductions of blood pressure in the young may quickly become apparent in those suffering with asthma, since high salt intakes have been shown to aggravate symptoms. High salt intake could even predispose children to a greater chance of piling on the pounds, since eating salty foods has been clinically linked to higher consumption of fizzy, calorie-rich drinks to quench thirst.

Adults should eat no more than 6g of salt a day and children even less. Children aged 4-6 years should consume no more than 3g of salt a day and children aged 7-10 years no more than 5g. To calculate the salt content of food from sodium you need to multiply the amount by 2.5.

Now you know the salty truth! Share with your friends and families to avoid consuming too much salt!
